Good evening,

I have a leica iiif I believe. The serial number is 598067. If that helps. I had a roll of film rip and jam in between the shutter and the pressure plate. I removed the vulcanite cover and removed the jam but it has caused the shutter to get stuck after I cock the shutter and hit the shutter release, the cloth shutter only partially releases. Any body have any suggestions on how to fix?

Thanks

I loading the film after trimming the leader and advanced the film once or twice and it ripped and got jammed in between the pressure plate and the shutter

I can only take an educated guess that either a piece of film is still fouling the curtains or ribbons, or that a ribbon has slackened off when its curtain was jammed, and has come off its pulley. Or, possibly has become detached. Either way the first curtain is hung up on something. Don't force it!

Access is greatly improved by removing the front plate over the shutter and light traps behind it. The catch is, that you'll first need to take off the top cover, meaning, rangefinder vertical alignment would have to be re-calibrated, shutter speed dial correctly re-assembled, and a sync wire unsoldered and re-attached.

It's hard for me to offer a balanced perspective on the difficulty of this because I have been doing camera repair for a long time and I have just serviced a IIIf rangefinder and shutter, and I had no problems at all. It is certainly more involved than simply removing the casing, (though, kudos for doing that yourself). A IIIf is a rather wonderful Leica, so I have to echo Chris's suggestion to have it looked at by an experienced repairer. But I've attached a link to some images and text detailing a little of what is involved.
