Leica image 3D qualities.

I have often read about the characteristic of Leica lenses producing a 3D like effect to images, I have had a few that stand out more than others. If that was true then shouldn't it always happen? Maybe the effect is more a combination of lens quality/lighting/apeture/grace from above. This image seemed to have that effect, 35/2 Summicron @ f4:

Nice image, Todd.

I think it's the sharp, but not harsh, quality of the lens combined with the beautiful bokeh that gives that 3D effect when the background is out of focus like this.

In this particular photo the 3D effect is brought about by the backlighting of the sharply focussed statue and the fact that the background is out of focus and in shadow. Nice shot.

I think Frank has something here, if you look at the statue the upper portion has more "pop". The lower portion against the closer and lighter colored brick seems to fade abit. The strong backlighting is another factor.

I agree with the comment about the backlighting and shadow by Frank. I think those are the main factors here. Also agree that it's a nice shot. :) The lower half of the statue doesn't "pop out" of the background quite so much though.

Clearly you have to have a wide aperture. Another factor may be the distance between the figure (main subject) and background. In this photo you have a differential there, with the background to the left of the statue much further away than the background on the right.

Figure/background tonality difference may contribute also. A dark figure on a light background, or light on dark would aid differentiation between the two.

Also, I think that the background needs to be in the same plane if possible, especially if the figure is a person and the background is composed of people too.

I bet there are lots of other factors.

Oops, Todd's already made the comment on the lower part of the statue. That's what happens when you fall asleep posting. Time to go to bed...
