I'm looking to rip the factory skid-coat off my M8 and replace it with something more along the lines of the texture you see on the M6 here- http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58642

It's been a while since I've handled an M6, so I can't be certain that's the factory covering (it looks like it is). I considered camera-leather levant, but in pictures, the levant seems to have larger, softer, and shallower grain.

Any recommendations?

just replaced mine with the pebbled leather from camera leather . great grip and feel . i chose the burgundy on a black chrome body . looks good .

HA, HA! "Rip"? It should only be so easy...

Grammatical simplicity doesn't exclusively imply ease, only less typing 🙂

Anyway- have you had a tough time removing the factory covering, I'd assume?

I considered a burgundy-like color myself; I got hooked on the cognac tone on previous leicas. Have a picture?

I've only tried removing vulcanite. My old M2 came off fairly easily, in big sections for the most part, but recently I stripped an ancient Minolta Autocord. Some big pieces were already missing so I figured it'd be an easy job. The pieces still there were extremely tenacious and stubborn.

no i don't have a photo yet . i was looking along the same lines as you with the cognac color . the burgundy is really nice though . not to bright . i should have a photo this weekend and i will post on the thread .

That would be great- thanks!

On another note, are there any alternative providers that produce M8 kits?

That, or does anyone have any personal pictures of the camera-leather black kidskin?

M6 and later are easy to remove. Just stick on covering and not like Vulcanite.
I did my M8 along with other M's.
It is quick and easy on the later M's, but a pain on earlier ones, but do-able with a little patience and time. Have no fear with the M8
Aki-Asahi is the other place that makes coverings for cameras, but they don't list the M8

Do you find people notice you more while taking photos with such a colored camera?

don't know . i haven't had a chance to try it out yet . i have been working a lot the past 6 weeks . hopefully in november when i am off i will try outthe new combination .

in daylight the color is more muted than in the photo posted so i don't think it would draw to much attention .

People, other than other photographers, don't notice the color of your camera, or at least they don't care. Remember those 2 inch wide brightly patterned "guitar strap" neck straps from the seventies?

Hi,

Is that real leather? Do you remember the price?

Thanks,
RLouzan

yes it is real leather . it was around $50.00 with shipping .

i replace my m2 earlier in the year with the imitation leather and was pleased but now that i bought the real stuff i am going to redo the m2 with something genuine .

It looks fantastic. ... I don't blame you for choosing real leather.

I recently re-covered an M3 with the Levant Black embossed leather from Cameraleather. I love the look, feel and smell of this covering. I prefer it a little to the black kidskin I used to re-cover a Contax II.

That looks absolutely fantastic; I'm really interested in the texture as well.

Do you have a photo of this covering? Sorry, I'm just having a really hard time finding personal images of the camera-leather pebbled and levant-
