Canada, eh.
If you could, would you trade a Hasselblad CM with back, WLF, and 80mmf2.8 lens for a Leica M3 with 50mmf2.8 Elmar (original) and googled f3.5 Summaron? Let's say everything is in EX condition.

Both sides equal about $1000, so it depends what you want and what other gear you already have, right?

i wouldn't do it simply because slow lens' on a leica make no sense to me. I like to shoot wide open and in the dark a lot, so i would get a M3 with a 50mm f1.4 before i traded in a hasselblad.

Exactly. While I wouldn't mind having the 'blad, I love my M3 (and my goggled summaron 3.5), and can't see making the trade myself.

It all depends on what you're using though, I traded a big Contax G set w/ lots of stuff, for another M Leica and a couple ZM lenses. Got less stuff, but I hadn't been using the contax gear.

That was probably an easier decision though, because the contax wasn't getting used because I had something else (leica M) that was doing the same thing I'd be using the contax for.

The Hasselblad vs the Leica is different enough that I'd have to be sure I wasn't going to miss it later.

Black CM and black C lens.

You still don't say whether it's a black 500cm or a black 501cm. I suppose it's a 500cm as this corresponds to the lens generation (unless it's on of the late C lenses that are basically a CF).

Personally, I wouldn't do this trade. I would value a 500cm with wlf, a12 back and C lens at around $600 provided that everything's in good condition (both mechanically and cosmetically). I don't have any experience with M camera prices but I would assume the M3 with the lenses is worth quite a bit more.

Interesting thinking. Slow lenses on a Leica make a lot of sense to me: I can hand hold at 1/8 sec because there is no mirror to cause vibration as in an SLR. So I get great results from gems like the canon 28 f3.5, C/V 50 f 2.5, and C/V 28 f3.5.

As for Frank's dilemma, I have both systems and I use my Leica M stuff a lot more than my 500 C/M kit. Hassy photography is more deliberate, sometimes involving a tripod. Leica M shooting, or any rangefinder shooting for that matter, is more spontaneous because the camera is easily handled and used. In Frank's terms, would he trade a BMW R75 for a Ducati 916? Depends...

On financial terms, definitely not. I bought a great 500cm + 80mm for £450, the same I paid for my M3 and the Elmar is worth about £200.

I'd recommend having both - my ideal two cameras.

Hypothetical Similar problem

Hypothetical Similar problem

Frank,

I was about to start a thread with a similar question:

What to sell to fund a CM/80 CFE/A12 combination?

Candidates:

M5 with newer frame lines: 35-135, 50-75, 28-90 & CLA all by DAG
28mm M-Hexanon
35 UC-Hexanon
All of my LTM gear and keep 3 M mount lenses: 28-50-90.

What to do? I honestly don't know. How about you Frank? 😕🙂😎

Cheers!

Hi Wayne. In the trade possibility that I brought up, I'm the one with the Hasselblad. The fellow with the M3 and lenses is talking to a few others about their Hasselblads as well.

Two different cameras for different purposes. The M3 will not replace a Hassy. On a personal basis I am not fond of the framelines on the M3 which does not have 35mm. As for the older elmar it is not as sharp as the newer elmar-m, which is probably preferable. That said a Summicron with f2.0 is probably preferable to the elmar-m. If you have a Leica M2, M4, M4-P, M-5, M-6, MP, or M7 the M-3 will not be an addition.

Different dilema. Similar painful decision.

Yeah, I have 2 M2's, a bunch of 50's, and both f3.5 and f2.8 35mm Summarons (without googles) already. Guess I'll keep the Hasselblad.
