leica m7 with mp finders

No. Leica assigns serial numbers in batches and and some "newer" batches of numbers are used up before "older" batches of numbers. So you cannot trust the serial number. I had an M7 that I was convinced (through internet tattle) had the MP finder. Leica NJ told me otherwise. If you have a serial number that is 29xxxxx it is highly likely you have the MP finder. Any serial number 28xxxxx or below you'll need an evaluation by a Leica tech to be sure.

As above, the best indicator is the broad orange and black panel on the box.

The new finder was first seen around 285... and by 288.... was mainly used, but there was no clean introduction serial number from what I've observed.

EBay and dealer stocks ...... the box.

thanks guys

I looked into this some time ago.

You definitely need to check with Leica. As a previous post states, as both cameras and lenses are produced in batches, the serial no is an inaccurate indication.

However, from what I had read previously... definitely 29XXXXX and higher have the updated finder.

My M7 is 285XXX and has the updated finder.

My M7 is 2888xxx and does state it has the MP finder upgrade on the box, so it looks like we're narrowing it down nicely so far...

Hi guys,

If you box doesn't says and your serial number is 2885XXX, how do you check on the camera if you've got the MP finder? Besides going to Leica.

Cheers,

I've no idea about the practice of labelling boxes at the Leica factory, but would assume that if it doesn't say so then your M7 does not have the MP viewfinder. My box has a large orange panel on it saying "New -with improved viewfinder" - can't miss it.

As the MP finder is supposed to reduce flare compared to the original viewfinder, if you don't have the box to tell then I guess the best way would be to try and induce flare into the viewfinder - if you find it happens relatively easily then you may well have the original specification viewfinder.

I don't have a non-MP viewfinder to conduct comparative tests, but perhaps if there is too much flaring for you then send it in for an upgrade. If not, then save the money - it doesn't matter which finder you have for your camera!

My M7, 0.85x has serial#2884xxx. I am not 100% sure it's MP finder or not. However, I have another M6TTL 0.85 LHSA body which definitely showed prononce flare on focusing. While it is not quite visible in my M7 0.85x.

Think the actual starting serial# is still a myth........

It's harder to identify with the .85 version which is prone to flare even with the updated finder.

FYI, the updated viewfinder usually has a blue/purple tinge to it, indicating that it has been multicoated.
