Leica Mag

Thanks Bill for the strong endorsement!

Thanks to RFF members, three of the missing issues are in the mail on their way to me for scanning, annotation, and upload.

I've also got a surprise in the works -- an interview with one of the photographers who appeared in a 1961 issue.

Fingers crossed that Leica Camera AG sees this for the labor of love that it is and allows it to continue.

You won't believe it, but, when I heard about the site and first went to it, I opened one of the issues absolutely at random - and there was an article by me. I didn't even remember writing for them. I was stunned.

This is addictive reading!
Opened one issue at random... an article about Alfred Eisenstaedt by Herbert Keppler.
On the last page of the winter 1960 issue... The birth of the LEICA-MAN! :D

What an absolute shame. It's not like they have it available on their website. They were delightful to read!!

Leica asked me to close the archive, and so I did. Thanks all for reading while it was live!

I think Leica made a big mistake. I have no idea why they choose to do this considering the number of magazines that have online access to past issues. You put a lot of hard work into something many people would have enjoyed and at the same time would promote the Leica brand. I don't think they just made a mistake. I think somebody there is an idiot.

I think that Leica would rather have internet traffic to their own sites.....and thus controlling their brand online ......

I would think most folks visit multiple sites that involve their interests and that the Leica Magazine site might actually increase traffic to the "official" Leica sites.

I think it would be worth the effort to approach the CEO with an email and see if there's a way for Leica to incorporate this work through the company website or LFI.

F*#k, F*#k, F*#k!!! I saw this while I was traveling and couldn't wait to get home to my "real computer" so I could pull them up and look at these issues. Finally got a chance this morning and now they're all gone. Damn, I'm disappointed.

Summer 1968? About the 400mm and 560mm Telyts? Fantastic!

I cannot believe you imagined that this would go unchallenged. It was great, but a major all in one place copyright and trademark violation fest.

Just the trademark infringement alone could, have literally destroyed Leica's rights to their own trademark, without a legal challenge by them.

How could your attorney have let you proceed with this immense project without warning you?

Yeah, what a great shame, but the closure of the website was inevitable in the circumstances.

Today, it’s all about image rights, brand protection and the raising of revenue streams thereof.

I agree with Duane Pandorf, Leica could put back issues on their own website, but my guess is that they won’t; everybody and their dog would then be able to copy and distribute Leica’s material without Leica being able to receive any revenue.

Removal of the Leica Photography magazine archive site

Removal of the Leica Photography magazine archive site

A good friend alerted me to the archive site. What a shame that Leica forced the site to shut down. The past issues of Leica Photography offer valuable resource material for photographers, particular for Leica photographers USING LEICAs! It's a managerial misdirection on the part of whoever ordered the shut down. Evidently Leica doesn't want it be known that good photographic techniques and good photography DID exist in the past. The 'past' evidently doesn't add to their 'bottom line.'

I agree with Mr. Pierce. It's a bloody shame. These issues and its hosting site offered good PR for Leica - heck, they help keep the name "Leica" alive!

I value Mr. Pierce's opinion, wisdom, knowledge AND his ability to convey all three; not many today possess these positive attributes. I had the good fortune of meeting him when my dear late friend Sal DiMarco took me aside at the Leica Gallery (NYC) and led me to Bill and introduced him to me; it was like meeting 'GOD' - I grew up reading Bill's words!

I missed Camera 35 and Popular Photography very much AND I missed Bill's articles. Good photography magazines are very hard to come by these days.

There seems to be a widespread belief that nothing should be privately owned. Everyone just shares everything.

Might work, but I wonder how many people really want others in their house using their washing machine or TV?
