Hello (this is my first post).

I was checking the frame selector yesterday on my Leica MP and the frames got stuck on 35/135mm bright lines. This isn't too bad for me as I use a 35mm lens all the time at the moment. However, I'd like to get it fixed as I'm thinking of getting a 50mm lens at some point.

Has anybody else had this problem and found a solution? Or is it something I need to take in for repair. If it is a repair situation can you recommend a London based company/technician (I live in East London). Ideally I'd like the repair to be done quickly (and at reasonable cost) as I don't like to be parted from my beautiful camera for too long!

Many thanks.:)

CRR in Luton is really your best choice - if you book a slot with Peter, he will get it back to you inside two weeks.

If those excellent suggestions don't work then you could take it in to any of the Leica vendors in London. I'm sure someone such as Red Dot Cameras, Richard Caplan, Aperture, R G Lewis etc. would endeavour to help you. Alternatively, try one of the other camera shops where you can find knowledgeable staff - eg London Camera Exchange, Jacobs on New Oxford St or others.

Many thanks for those suggestion guys. Unfortunately, twiddling the lever hasn't helped. CRR in Luton isn't taking repairs till May, and is also quite a journey for me. I'll probably give Red Dot a go as they are quite local. I'll report back with the result.

I assume the selcetor moves well but the frames do not. Get the camera quite warm, say under a coat, or wait for summer. It might help free up some lubricated mechanical connection. I am not sure where things are stuck. An MP isn't very old. Of course its an astonishing development in such a camera. Should be like the Rolls Royce stories of old. After letting Leica know of this an unmarked van should pull up outside your house and two dust-coated German gentleman from Solms should lock themselves in your dining room for an hour and emerge with your repaired camera and disappear without a word.

Yes Richard, you are correct, the selector moves fine, it's just the framelines which are stuck. And yes, not an old camera. I bought it used 2 years ago sn: MP-28909** and it has been getting a fair ammount of use.

I've been reading up on the internet and it does seem a rare problem, although some people have had it happen to their M6's it seems.

I'll keep an eye out for the dust coated gentlemen from Solms.;)

So after digging around in the MP's box I find a valid Leica Passport (hurrah!), although it is a used camera, a quick email to Leica confirms I can get my camera repaired, free of charge by Leica themselves. I can either send it in by courier/special delivery or take the camera into a Leica dealer.

I decide on the latter and take it into Red Dot cameras, who are very nice people and happy to send it in for me. Ivor commented that it was a very unusual fault, and that generally MP's very rarely go wrong, which I can well believe given the build quality.

Whilst I'm there I take the opportunity to look at an M8. I was really impressed by the feel and ease of use of the camera, but quite suprised by how noisy it is. I think I'll be sticking to film for a while longer.

After 3 weeks of really missing my camera, I've just collected it and it is working flawlessly. I didn't get a chance to discuss what the problem was as the shop was quite busy. I'm so relieved to have it back in my hands.:)

Thanks to everyone for all the friendly and useful advice.
