Hi, I have a hazy summaron 35 3.5 and I attempted to clean it. But in the process of doing so I don't know what on earth possessed me to unscrew the helicoid!!! :bang: I can't seem to put it back correctly so it focuses properly!

Is there a trick of doing this? I guess when the lens gets re-greased the helicoid will need to come off too but how does it go back properly?

Any help is much appreciated.

I haven't done this with that particular lens, but patience and perseverance is a big factor. With a 50mm lens, all you have to do is get the focus helical lined up on the correct thread and you're basically OK, but with a non-50mm the RF cam advances at a different rate from the lens barrel, so it too is on some sort of a bias mechanism (most likely a fine screw thread). It may be that you have the main helical lined up right but the RF cam helical off by a thread or two... in that case, you will need to try other possible positions for the RF cam thread. Lots of trial and error, I'm afraid.

Thanks heaps for the advice!I've been trying for the last couple of hours and can only get 2 starting thread positions. Both of which are wrong. Will keep trying..

I'm happy to report that after numerous attempts the summaron went back together as one piece and now full functional. I took the first 2 rear elements off and cleaned everything. The only surfaces I couldn't get access to was the surfaces between the 2nd and 3rd element as they appear to be glued together(?) But the lens is much cleaner now.

Thanks for your help Rick.
