Found this on eBay. Since it is cheap I picked one up and gave it a try. I can now use my 39mm filters and a 39mm hood on my Summitar.

Yes indeed. I've got several of those adapters, and the hood that heavystar sells as part of a Summitar kit. Not as goofy looking as the original barndoor shade, but still effective.

The bard door shade while effective is somewhat clumsy to use so I prefer the 39mm screw-on hood..
