I have been looking for either of the lenses for awhile, but they all seem to be overpriced and the conditions are questionable. Anyone know a person or place who has it for sale...

Maybe if you've been looking for awhile, they are actually priced correctly. Also hard to evaluate what you consider overpriced without knowing what you want to spend? A lot more info could help get you an answer. Where are you located, how much would you spend, where have you looked for one, etc...?

Try posting in the Classifieds here.

Expect to pay a premium if you are looking for scratch/haze free, as it means someone else probably paid ~$200 to have it serviced recently. If price is a bit deal, a Zeiss Planar or Voigtlander VM 50/1.5 might be worth considering as you can find ones in good prices for less than the Leicas.

A year ago nice ones were plentiful but a little pricy. Amazing how they've dried up. I've noticed this with SS M3's too. They're hard to find and prices are crazy if you find a decent one.

I noticed KEH has a bargain grade in the upper $8xx's. It's become more of a crap shoot with Keh since the sold a few years ago but if you don't like it it's easy to return. Setadel, one of the sponsors of RFF might have one. If you order from them be sure to check it thoroughly. When I was in the market for a rigid I ordered one from them that was supposed to have perfect glass and it has a 3-4mm ring of separation inside.

If you want a classic that's every bit as good or possibly better than the Summicron take a look at the Nikkor 5cm f2 ltm. I owned one and they are superb in every way. I would rank it at a minimum the equal of the Rigid or DR. Construction is all brass and wide open performance is probably a touch better than the Summicron. It's very smooth in tone being a Sonar design too. You can probably find a very clean one for a fraction of the price of the Summicron.

Don't overlook the V3 Summicron if you just want a Summicron. Over fifty years of using Leicas I've used almost everything. The V3 is a lot like the Rigid but has better flare control. They're quite a good lens especially if you shoot where light sources are in or near the edge of the frame.

As time goes on, it becomes more and more difficult to find pristine examples of these lenses. They are prone to scratches and haze.

The Nikkor is a great suggestion if you are on a budget. Lots of nice ones from Japanese ebay sellers, which are top notch as a rule.

As long as here is no big optical issues like separation of lenses or patina on the coatings, Rigid version is fine. I had one in 2016, it was in use since it was made, some play in the body parts, but fine in performance.

IMO, If you want clean in and out, no issues silver lens, then Planar ZM is the Cron. Hard to tell any difference in rendering and less (it seems) of the focus shifts.

Just sold a rigid Summicron in near mint conditions for $700.00 + s/h. Honestly I don't think that's overpriced. Also, there are some examples going on ebay.

How much you want to pay?

I you think that's overpriced, perhaps you should look for lenses with similar performance but a little more affordable. Voightlander and Nikkor lenses are really good IMHO.

A classic lens, but there are many fine alternatives at better prices as mentioned above.

Also, as noted, the lens cosmetics may be look good, but bright light examination will often reveal significant coating marks that coalesce and to produce flare, reduced contrast, and hazy images. The remedy is to polish and re-coat the the front, and less often, the rear glass elements.

Be prepared to spend $250-300 to re-coat the front element. I had a rigid summicron polished and re-coated at Focal Point with excellent results. Wait time can be a few months. If I add in the original cost of the lens purchased from an RFF member in the classifieds, the total price was 750 USD. Not bad overall, and it is one of my favorite lenses.

Check Schouten Select. I found a near new one a while back. Seriously, one of the nicest I'd seen. Cost me $1000.

I was lucky 25 years ago when I purchased locally a mint M3 (receipt from Germany, with QC label) with equally mint Rigid Summicron 50/2. I took care of them since then. The beauty of such camera equipment is awesome.

Expect to pay at least $800 for an acceptable rigid cron in good condition. Of course there are always some who score them for less, but that's a risky endeavor and largely a matter of luck. A Summicron in super cosmetic condition can add a lot more. Paying $1000 for a ho-hum rigid cron with good glass and mechanics is common. These are starting prices. The only thing close to a bargain (if you can call $500-600 a bargain) is the collapsible cron.

They are all worth these prices IMO.

It is nice to see old lenses appreciate in value. I paid less than $2000 for a mint M3 with like new items for close-up photography, a 35mm Leica finder in the box, 35mm/2.8 Summaron, 50mm/2 rigid Summicron, 90mm/2.8, ... etc.All were shiny in chrome, looking new. I bought a DR only a couple of years ago, and it came to me without the matching goggles. It cannot be mounted (well) on the M8 or M9, I read online.

This thread started rather like a "want to buy" ad, so thanks (to anyone wanting to sell such an item) for resisting offering it here publicly! 🙂 Such a matter discussed by IM would be up to you.... And of course as mentioned the Classifieds section would be useful.

Also, as usual, please remain courteous and friendly to all.

My rigid is perfect and I would never sell it.

Stuff is getting harder to find as we move away from golden age of photos.

Example I found a near perfect Nikon F2 today and it was marked student camera. I ask why it was a student camera. Answer was fully manual. Fine with me. $200. I shoot digital manual anyway

I went there to find yellow, green, yellow green, orange & red filters. No used ones available except Ebay. Found mint yellow, green, & red Nikon brand . All mint.

So keep looking.

Sorry I haven't replied back sooner. Thanks all for the great info on the new places to look. Online and some locally I notice they all been rated "excellent condition" but the glass was just flat out ugly. They were asking prices around 1200-1500 usd and they were not even cla or even checked recently. I don't really care too much about the body/cosmetics. I bought a 50 summilux v1 for 1500 usd 4-5 yrs ago and I'm just surprised with the grading and prices recently.

i have had tried the Zeiss Planar and own Voigtlander VM 50/1.5 but its currently glued to my m4. I just wanted something to match my m3 and its limitation of the min focus distance of 1m. also how is the Leica Summicron 2/5cm collapsible with it?
