the Nikon Rangefinder Camera by Robert Rotoloni is an interesting book Joe.
it has a lot of info that is not on the web.

Confirmed RF addict...
Isn't there something with 'mir' in the url that has a ton of Nikon info... I'll take a look & edit my post with a link... I think it mostly talks about lenses, but I have looked at the rf stuff before...

Ooooh, I feel the subtle rumblings of GAS. Such beautiful cameras. How much are these things, anyway?
(Maybe I should stick to a Kiev 4AM that I'm currently watching on ebuoy, they're only about $50-60 bucks).

Joe,
The Nikon Hostorical Society website and Bob Rotoloni's Nikon Rangefinder book are good places to start. PM me and I'll email your keyboard off about Nikon rangefinder cameras as I have several and have been a collector/user since I joined the NHS in 1991. I am very happy to help you navigate the waters and can put you in touch with other NHS folks, friends of mine who love to share info.

Pacific Rim Camera also has a nice overview of the Nikon RF system. Some of it is Rotoloni-lite ... abbreviated versions of what's in his book.

Nikon's own corporate history site has some very good info.
Here's the page on the cameras:
http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/portfolio/about/history/rhnc/index.htm
and here's the "thousand and one nights" page, which has in-depth articles on some of the RF and SLR lenses.

I occasionally feel GAS rumblings for the only Nikon RF that really matters, the SP.
So far, I have been able to resist, although I keep recalling that all my Contax RF 35mm, 28mm and 21mm lenses would work just fine on the SP. Beautiful cameras, at least based on the ones that I have handled. Plus, it would look and work great with my 35/1.8 Nikkor in Nikon RF mount.

Here's a great tidbit from the Nikon corporate site, as they discuss how a weapons maker went about designing a sturdy camera to sell to American occupation troops:
"To supplement their own knowledge, Nippon Kogaku sought the advice of aircraft laboratories regarding lubricating oil, which supports durability, performance stability, and temperature resistance. Temperature experiments were performed repeatedly at such diverse locations as a meteorological observatory laboratory, the freezer at a fish market, and other industry's refrigerating facilities."

It seems as though the Nikon RF is the new M3! And before that, the Canon P. Chasing magic bullets?

why do you try to hurt me frank?
i was thinking of moving towards the future and saving for a used rd-1 but when push comes to shove what i really miss is the feel of an old heavy metal, meterless machine.
you can understand that better than most.
my magic bullet is the zi with the 25/35/50 lenses. 3 of the sharpest lenses out there now. it is a capable machine and when i am in the 'groove', i am a capable shooter.
no frank, no magic being sought after, just some nostalgia and a step backward.
as a side note...i am a contrarian...i don't care for leica mostly because everyone else does. i like my zi, i like that contax you sold me and i think i'm gonna really like the nikon.
i loved the canon p as well but i never did learn to hold on to the things i love.
moving on is part of my personality. so be it.

You know, Joe, this feels just as strange as claiming that Leicas have the best "build quality"
Nothing against Nikkor bodys. A friend in my neighborhood has an SP - truly wonderful. Except it couldn't mount many of my NON-LEICA lenses.
Best,
Roland.

moving with the flow has never been a strong point for me.
i like leicas but why own what everyone else has or wants when other gear is just as good and as capable?
i'm sure it's some kind of insecurity...

I honestly do not understand this post.
The Nikon RF body (note: not Nikkor - that is the name on the lenses) was developed with a proprietary S-mount lens system. It was never designed to mount anything but Nikkor S-mounts. It is compatible with certain old-style Zeiss lenses under 5.0cm for Contax ZI bodies (or, rather, certain Zeiss lenses under 5.0cm are compatible with the Nikon body) - but what's your point?
Nikonians are quite pleased with Nikkor glass and, quite frankly, do not have any reason to envy your non-Leica German glass anyway.

Joe,
I had two Kievs, sent them across the pond to Oleg, while they worked better, they just did not feel great. Not sure what it was, but they just were not as good as my Fed 2. I traded them (two bodies, 35, 50, 85 lenes) for a Bessa L. i got a Nikon S2 and love it. Wish I could afford a SP, but the S2 rocks.
I wish I had started with the S2 and skipped the russian experiment.

and just to be clear, i have no need to have leica glass.
my zm lenses make me smile, the czj 50 on the contax is pretty darn sharp and i hope the 50/1.5 will be as well.
the nikkor 50/1.4 is near legendary.
i want for nothing.
