I know that RFF might not be the best place to share love for Nikons, but I count that manual aspect of these cameras will prevail 🙂 Yesterday I managed to steal a few hours away from my family vacation and go shooting. I set out to make a few photos of "continental" Istria, Croatia's big peninsula in the Adriatic sea.
The main camera was my Hasselblad 500C and matching Planar 80mm. In addition, I had my Nikons, FM and FM2n, one loaded with Tri-X (I didn't have any Acros with me :-( ) and Fuji Pro400H in the other. I had following lenses:
Cosina 20mm f/3.8 - really not up to the Nikkor standards, just for fun with the FOV it gives
Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AI-S
Nikkor 35mm f/2.8 AI-S
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI - i.e. Longnose
Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AI
The reason for this post is that I wanted to share with you how much I enjoy shooting with Nikons, compact, simple to operate, solid, as if they would happily keep clicking if I went to the end of the world with them! Lenses are not compact compared to RF lenses, but compared to today's SLR plasticky lenses, they seem indestructible and made to last. They can produce some decent pictures, too, which is not a downside... ;-) I especially appreciate simplicity of my two manual Nikons. You compose, set the aperture on a ring on the lens, meter, focus and fire away. That's it! No buttons which you never know what you're pressing, no menus and sub-menus, no guessing what metering algorithm will do, no chimping to see if the camera managed to miss a focus, just basic picture taking! Don't get me wrong, this wasn't my first experience with this Nikon setup, I have these cameras and lenses for few years now, but I'm always taken with the great experience they provide. If I ever set out on a pure photographic trip I could easily make it with my Nikons alone (I would just add a Nikon 20mm)!
Photographs? Well, I had fun and got to fondle my cameras, I think that's enough for one outing. I'll try to make some photos next time ;-) But should anything half decent come out of this outing, I'll post them here...
