Leica LTM LTM vs M mount camera?

I have a few old Canon LTM lenses that I enjoy shooting on my M, but I have recently developed a burning desire to own a screw mount camera. It doesn't help that there have been recent threads extolling the virtues of the Canon P, etc :p

Please, tell me that its a silly desire and rid me of this painful gas attack :bang:

If you're managing well enough, you do not need a screw mount camera; but it's always good to have a back-up.
 
Don't.

They're romantic, sure, but they're elderly, a lot less convenient than an M, and, worst of all, they represent more STUFF to clutter up the house.

Spend the time and money on taking pictures instead.

BUY IT! Get a Canon P! They just don't cost that much, great back-up, and metal foil shutters mean no burn-through, great finder...

YOu know, I gonna get a cool black II because black painted is cheap :) Why not A/I with converted ltm mount but without vf :)

Actually, I'm curious if there is anybody out there that has shot with both and actually PREFERs shooting with a screw mount...?
 
You can always convert an M-Mount camera to use screw-mount lenses. The Bessa series makes it easier, with manually selected framelines. Just put one adapter on it, and you are set. With the Leica M's, you need to use the correct adapter.

Of course, with a screw mount Canon you do not need an adapter, and the viewfinder settings are manual. The Canon P and VI offer 1x finders, and a long RF baselength.

With all that said, I alternate between them. Gave the Leica M3 a good workout today. Just a test of lenses... twelve 50mm f2 lenses...Ranging from a pre-war CZJ 5cm F2 Sonnar to a Type 2 Rigid Summicron. A Leitz, Nikkor, Jupiter, and Zeiss mix all on the M3.

With either the Voigtlander 25/4 or 12/5.6, I prefer my IIIf to any of my Ms because it's much easier to slip into a pocket (and subjects tend to take it far less seriously).

Lately I've been using both a Standard and III when it's bright out and I can stop a lens down and guess the focus. I have a Summar which is a fine lens stopped down (and 'interesting' when open). I have a 50mm brightline finder and treat it as a point and shoot, but with small adjustments to focus based on where I see something developing. The rig is small, quick, quiet and fits in a jacket pocket. And only the old folks know what it is. ;)

But when I have to start opening a lens up and need to be careful with the focus, the M or other good finder can't be beat. I find I need more time in low light and low contrast to focus a III, and it can get frustrating if things are moving like people sometimes do.

I haven't tried a Canon screwmount yet.
 
Thanks for all the opinions. At some point, I may just have to get my hands on a screw mount body and experience it for myself.

I'm perfectly happy with what I have, and another body isn't magically going to make my photos any better :p , but reading all these darn threads keeps peaking my curiosity - its almost voyeuristic. You know you shouldn't look, but you can't stop looking...

I've always wondered - if I stopped reading RFF for about 1 month, would all these urges go away? Like a junkie being weaned off his fix? :D

For most of what I do I favor my IIIc + Summitar over my M2,M3,M6 or IIIf. It's more compact and lighter than the M's. The magnified rangefinder makes focusing easier (although not as bright as the M's). I'm not in a big hurry so a wind knob serves me as well as a lever. Likewise I am not in a rush to change lenses, so the the screw mount is fine. For street photos I don't need a flash, so the IIIf only has the advantage of better material and construction vs the IIIc.
