I've been looking at M4-2/M4-P/M6 bodies for a possible near-future purchase, and as I wear eyeglasses, I've been looking carefully at the eyepieces on each camera. All M4-2s I've seen have metal eyepieces. M4-Ps generally have metal, and M6es generally have rubber. However, I see the occasional M4-P with rubber, and the very occasional M6 with metal (!). Is this the result of custom modifications? A gradual changeover? Is it well-documented?
(Apologies if there's already a thread on this topic - a link to anything relevant would be lovely!)

I know that early M6's had metal eyepiece covers before it became standard to have a rubber cover. I'm guessing the rubber cover on the M4-P is a result of a custom servicing.
Read more about the differences on the M6 here (see #5):

The two early M6 bodies I've had had metal eye pieces. One of my M4P (early) has a metal eye piece, the other (late) a rubber one.
It's a very simple replacement that you can do yourself.

I have an M4 that came with a metal eye piece. I had a repairman (Gerry Smith, Kindermann Canada) put on an M6 rubber eye piece. About $60. Looks great. Doesn't harm my plastic eyeglasses lenses.
Therefore, I imagine you can have any M4 and know that you can modify it to have the rubber eyeglasses-safe eye piece.

Consider this one; the Leitz Rubber Eyecup. I wear eyeglasses, and I have one on M2, M4-2, and M5. No viewfinder cutoff with 35mm lenses, at all. Available from Don Goldberg at DAG:

My M5s need red dots!
I got the small rubber band from Don, not the eyepiece, for $15. Granted, you could also go to any hardware store and get colored key rings for pennies and they would do the trick.
My two M6TTL had rubber rings. My M4-2, my M3 and my M5 had metal. I got rings for two of those from Don. My M3 has a nice felt ring from Asahi.
