I would like to know what the use of each of the hot shoe pin outs on the M8 are for? Anyone have a diagram of the hot shoe? I'm looking at other flashes and trying to find out if any others would work.

You need the proper SCA adapter. It is extensively covered in the manual.

You can stick a Nikon 800 in the hot shoe and use it on manual. I've done that -- and I think somebody said the 600 will also work. I also have a DX flash (the 28?) can't remember the number that I'll try when my camera gets back from Solms. The Nikons are very easy to use.

Be careful. Some older flashes, designed for mechanical-era cameras, can have very high trigger voltages. For example, the venerable Vivitar 283 can fry some digital camera circutry. Does the M8 manual recommend a maximum trigger voltage (or did they use heavy-duty wiring?)

I agree. I was not the first to try the 800; in some things, I firmly believe in being second.
But this was discussed earlier either here or on the Leica forum, and reassured, I went ahead and tried the 800 and it worked fine. The 600 is a stripped down version of the 800, and the DX28 or 29, or whatever it is, was designed for Nikon digital.
But, as with all things like this, you are on your own...

I have also used the Nikon SB 800 in manual mode on the M8. Works fine.
