It finally happened! My M8 shutter jumped it's track and is now broken. This is after 80,000 exposures since I bought it in 2007. I have not had one issue until this. Fortunately I have a second M8 as backup as well as a NEX 5n. It will be off to New Jersey soon. Funny thing is my MacBook pro quit 4 days earlier! Gremlins everywhere!

You might get upset when you get a repair invoice from Leica LOL!!

On a serious note, lucky you have a backup and 5n is not a slouch either.

Funny, my M8's shutter just derailed yesterday after 30,000 or so actuations. Looks like Solms will be getting a call from me tomorrow.

80,000 actuations. Don't feel bad. My shutter died after 20,000 (and I didn't feel all that bad, to be honest). I sent mine to Leica NJ.

Mine is the original 1/8000 sec shutter. Serial no. 332xxxx, latest firmware, never had any major hiccups. The shutter failure looks pretty catastrophic.

I'm sorry but a failure point of 80,000 actuations I could expect on a Canon Rebel or equivalent-level Nikon, not on what was a $5000 camera that came wrapped in a bunch of marketing prose about what a professional camera it was. I think Leica should be goodwilling these shutters out of warranty the same way they goodwill the cracking CCD's in the M9. 100K should be the cut-off, as long as there isn't evidence of abuse (like someone letting the shutter close while they're swabbing the sensor).

What is the cost of such a repair by Leica?
Is it something like $500?

I just bought an upgraded M8, and I am bracing myself ....

It would be great if Leica would step forward to take care of such failures.

Yea, I paid $475. The Leica expenses (including thoughts of going FF) drive me crazy. Sometimes (I know it's blasphemy), I wonder what it'd be like to shoot with a relaively small FF dslr and a few relatively small primes. But it never goes beyond idle pondering.

I would be happy with 80k as well. I don't think there is a
Warranty, but I did read somewhere that Leica rated the m8/m9 up to
120k clicks.

Wow, only 20,000, or 30,000 or 80,000 shutter actuations on a digital and then failure, and then you have to pay to have it fixed? After paying $5,000 plus for the camera just a few years ago? And Leica people just take that in stride? Hmmm

I feel better about my M8 than my Macbook Pro

I feel better about my M8 than my Macbook Pro

I posted on another thread about my 13 Macbook Pro biting the dust despite being 1 1/2 years old and never being abused. My M8 is older, and even fell on a solid marble floor after I tripped on the tripod. It worked fine 3 years since I pancaked my M8 on the floor. And of corse, the irreplaceable images I have created! They are priceless to me! A few hundred for my M8 to get fixed is ok, Hell, my cars cost more for God sake! Same thing for my MAC. The photos on my hard drive are fine. The Motherboard is toast! Apple will fix it for $225. This is just the cost of taking photos for me, but my data is SAFE and that makes me feel rich!!!!!!

I'm not "taking it in stride." I didn't have a choice :( But I'm not sure what I'll do in the future. Leica RFs cost a heck of a lot, especially if you want FF digital, and I'm not sure if I want to have that much money invested in what's a hobby/passion for me. That's why I have pondered a relatively small FF DSLR and relatively small primes.

A 5D II with 2 or 3 Olympus OM primes is a pretty nice kit, fits in the same bag as a M8.2 and comparable lenses.

Thanks JSU. That body, along with the 5D III and Nikon D600, are ones that I have considered. A great photographer on flickr (Vasilikos Lukas) uses the exact rig that you mention for street photography and works magic with it.

Depends on what bag you're talking about. I use a Domke F5XB with my M9, 21 Voitlander, 35 Cron IV, 50 Cron Tabbed, 90 Thin T-E (and an SF24D flash). I have a 5D and there is no way it and a set of comparable-focal-length Zuikos will fit in that bag or one of similar size.

And unless I am doing some very leisurely shooting, working with a 5D and manual lenses which need to be opened-up to focus and stopped-down to shoot, wears thin in a big hurry. The only non-Canon lens I use more than occasionally is a 20mm f/4 Nikkor, as I usually use it stopped down to f/8 or f/11 and set to hyperfocal for the next-wider stop.
