M9 Firmware Version 1.196
1. Performance improvements:
Further improvements of SD-Card compatibility.
Implementation of the Lens detection of the new APO-Summicron-M 1:2/50mm ASPH.
Improved power management.
The camera is now measuring battery stability internally. In case of weak battery stability, the camera switches off automatically.
Using old batteries could have lead to camera crashes and banding stripes under certain conditions with the previous firmware versions. Especially the usage of nearly 6 years old M8
batteries proved to be critical.

If I were convinced that my banding issues -- usually occurring on the 3rd shot of a rapid 3 ISO 2500 shots in succession -- were related to the battery, I would jump at the update. But from what I can gather from the informational pdf, the firmware will now shut down the camera when it decides the battery has suffered from age/use (sorry, not sure the right term), in situations where the existing firmware would not. My camera is about a year and a half old, and I do put it through heavy use -- so I'll take note of the fact that they suggest getting new batteries at the 3-year mark. But I'll wait for user reports, I think, before upgrading the firmware.
The improved SD-compaitibility feature is welcome. But I only had one meltdown, a year ago June, and have haven't had problems with the two types of cards I've been using since. Again, user reports may persuade me otherwise, but I think I'll wait.
I wish the banding problem could be cured through a firmware update, but there have been threads in the past explaining why this would/could not be the case. I'm resigned to having that second shot be my money shot

Banding can be caused by the card, or even by the proximity of a mobile phone.

Any chance this new firmware will work with the M8/M8.2?

problem with new M9 firmware update
problem with new M9 firmware update
After downloading to the card and then inserting it into the camera I am asked if I want to update to firmware 1.001. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Tried that.
A chunk fell off the end of the top plate before the sensor broke.

Hasn't happened with mine. I'm not in the mood to be forced to buy new batteries preemptively when mine are working fine. Think I'll stick with 1.162 which works for me without a glitch.

Same here. I find this aspect of the update ridiculous.

Anybody found the m9/m9p, the camera doesn't recoil or delay to recock for several seconds under discreet mode?

That is the function of discreet mode, release the shutter button to recock the shutter.

I'll try anything. I can't do anything about the ubiquitousness of mobile phones, but, jaapv, which card do you suggest I try?

Lead coat your camera.
I suggest some Sandisk 16GB Ultra cards.
Cheers.

Maybe SanDisk 8GB will be OK in mine now but I haven't done the upgrade yet and won't be experimenting with SanDisk for some time even when I do.

Since upgrading the firmware I have noticed there are times in the discreet mode when I release my finger, there is no rocock sound. This happens on my M9-P but not on my M9. Weird.

I notice the same thing...the delay of the recock even when finger is off the shutter already. And the camera just shuts down when battery level is still about 40%. My 3 batteries were ok up until 10% life on the previous firmware. Can I go back to the previous firmware? I dont want to buy new batteries knowing that these were fine before the update.

Still holding off upgrading. My Lexar cards work fine. I don't use continuous and my battery lasts ages. I will sit on the previous version of the software a while yet by the look of things.
