Hey,
I was wondering... do you get your original M9 top/bottom plate(s) back when you send it to Leica to for the M9-P top-plate upgrade?

Apparently not, but myself think this is a rip off in case you want to return it to its original condition later (lets face it, if its still operable in ten years time there won't be many M9's with a red dot that haven't been buggered about with)..

Probably, if you ask. Has anyone tried asking?

If you are paying for the new cover then you have every right to have the old one, you bought it, it is your property.

...unless Leica is pricing out the upgrade assuming they can keep your top plate to recycle on other cameras. Still worth asking them, though.

I just shot off an email to Leica asking about this, unfortunately they are closed from now until Monday, but as soon as Monday rolls around I should have an answer for you.
I looked all through the literature they provided to us as a dealer, and there is nothing indicating the return or non-return of the replaced parts. I would guess that they are assuming most people will not care to have the old top and bottom plates, but it does seem like that if the customer was interested in keeping those parts there should not be a problem with it. But, no final answer on that until Monday, at least from me.
Wish I could have been more help!

I suppose you need to consider Leica's position, I imagine replacing top and bottom plates (through damage) is a relatively common and lucrative source of income for the service department, so what would happen if a secondhand market for these parts developed?

How about at least some sort of core charge discount?

When I swapped my VF from a .72 to a .58 I tried to get the old VF but my request was quietly ignored by Leica NJ.

Fixed the link. It's nothing special, just the regular news page on the M9 upgrade program on their US website.
