Hello digital Leica friends, I'm curious... has anyone had any problems using a version 1 Nokton 35mm 1.2 on their digital Leica ? I seem to have an older style Nokton with a rear shroud that caused problems focusing at infinity with the M8. Any problems on the M9 and newer ?

it was a while ago, but i remember this difficulty with a first version 35/1.2 and leica m8 or 9. try will van manen at kameraservice nl. i'm pretty sure he can fix the shroud and add 6 bit code at the same time.
cheers

don't fully understand this "rear shroud" issue. it was 5 years ago, had M8 & v1 Nokton 35mm 1.2 and don't recall any focusing issues with this combo.

i think the focusing problem was at infinity only. not sure though. I had someone interested in trading another lens for my Nokton but he backed out after seeing the rear shroud on the lens. I wanted to get the facts here. Thanks for sharing your experience jarski !

here is another mention of the shroud issue on the cameraquest.com site. quote from cameraquest.com. it may not apply to your lens:
Leica M8 Update: The 35/1.2 was introduced in 2003. Once the Leica M8 was introduced in late 2006, some M8 owners reported focusing resistance as the lens focused near infinity. The factory determined this was caused by the rear element guard sometimes binding with the focusing mechanism, and issued a retrofit parts replacement. CameraQuest has only the later 35/1.2's V1's in stock. M8 retrofitting early V1 35/1.2's is $150 + return shipping. A part has to be replaced, and the lens checked over for focus. Average turnaround is 2 to 3 weeks after receipt. NOTE: This occurs ONLY on the VERY EARLY V1 35/1.2's! Most have already been converted.

thanks for elaborating Rick, its interesting how the same lens and same camera (M8) can bind for some users and work fine for others. i wonder if its a mythical Leica problem or an actual one...

this is not something for someone who is not used to doing repairs.

I've seen too many lenses damaged by DIYS newbies.

While the part is no longer available from Cosina, just have your local repairman disassemble the lens and grind the part down.

Is this an issue with the LTM versions of this lens, or M mount versions? Did they even offer an M mount version of the Type 1?

I don't have one of these, but I'm thinking of getting one. It is an LTM, and definitely version 1.

I would repeat the advise against attempting the DIY repair unless you're confident and experienced. It is soooo easy to ruin things -- especially with a grinder. Having said that, I would attempt this repair. I've gained the experience -- I have the bin full of destroyed items (practice items 🙂 ) to prove it. The grinder to use would be a Dremel, but I wouldn't recommend using it hand held. I use a "milling machine" I built for my Dremel. Very precise, very controlled, very slow, but usually very good results.

rfaspen, not sure what it is you are getting, but the 1.2/35mm Nokton was never made in LTM. So yes, all Type 1 lenses were M mount.

Lem, IIRC there is a competent repair guy in Berlin, near Ostkreuz Bahnhof. But for the life of me I cannot recall where I found a link to his website...

Oops. You're right johan. I'm looking at a 35/1.7 which is obviously a different lens. Not enough coffee today.

But now that I've waken up. The 35/1.2 is a neat lens by reputation. I wouldn't mind one of those too.

Mr. Prügel of Fotoservice Ostkreuz - nice man and he doesn't charge that extra "Leica Tax" many people do.
