Made in Canada

Hi,

Just got a v4 35 Summicron in the mail and the front of the lens is misaligned causing the hood to sit completely crooked. Had to drop it off at the shop (at the seller's expense) to have the lens disassembled. I noticed something else that seemed off though..

The bottom of the lens reads "Made in Canada" but the front of the lens reads "Letiz" like the Made in Germany versions.

I've never seen this before. According to the seller it was manufactured in 1986. The serial # is 3396709. Anyone know?

While I'm at it, he sent a 12526 hood w/ cap but I already have a 12524 laying around. Which one should I sell?

PS- Body is only dusty because I've been out of a lens for 2 months now.

Leitz Midland gear was marked as Made in Canada or just "Canada" till around 1990 or so.

Canadian lenses were made in the Leitz factory there. Many were designed by the legendary Dr. Walter Mandler. They are every bit as good as the ones made in Germany. There of my favorites are the pre-asph Summilux 35, the Summilux 75, and the Tele-Elmarit 2.8. I have a 35 Summicron with the same crooked front ring and tilted lens shade and have been meaning to send it off for repairs for about 10 years.

Thanks guys. I know all about the Canada thing and don't care one way or the other but it's just every Made in Canada lens I've seen reads "Made in Canada" on the front as well. Just though it odd. Maybe it's something they only did for a year or two.

Haha yeah I was going to wait and shoot with it for a while first, but I've already been out of a lens for two months and figured I'd just keep the dry spell going (that and so the seller would pay for the repair). I sold both of my M lenses 2 months ago to buy a v4 35 from a guy in Belgium. DHL held it for 2 weeks and when they finally let me get it the box was destroyed and the glass looked like it had literally been knifed. This is round 2 and I guess I'm lucky that it's a simple repair and the quality of the lens isn't compromised at all. The three week wait is going to be brutal though.

I've been checking, watching some ELC lenses on ebay. I remember some of them have made in Canada only on the black ring closer to the mount.

Could just be a low production count variant that was towards the end of the production run, but all the Midland lenses did say Leitz somewhere on the front as far as I know.
