Magnum photog Ara Guler - portraiture with a wide angle lens

Thanks for the link. The wide angle used for the portraits is probably the SA 21/3.4. There's a photo of Guller with Hitchcock and the lens on his camera looks like one.
 
I'm not finding optically distorted photos as fascinating...

BTW, in the article Picasso is marked as Spanish, Dali is not.
 
I’m curious as to how he captured that dawn shot w the fishermen. A lot of
dodging and burning on the print?
 
The sky looks burnt around the clouds. Some of his portraits have a lot of burning in the corners. Having seen some of his Istanbul prints firsthand in his cafe, it seemed to me he also pushed his film a lot.
 
I do find this statement amusing:
“A good photographer can take a picture with a sewing machine.”

Phrases such as this are often stated by famous, talented, successful etc etc photographers.
Who then pick up their Leicas, Rolleiflexes, Nikons etc.
I mean I get the point - it's the photographer not the camera - but still.

Not many real portraits in there...and lots of stretched, alien like heads. If you like that sort of thing, that is fine. See how many clients would like it.

According to the article and Guler's career trajectory, he did just fine in the securing clients department.

That’s just typical Nat Neo style of photography to shoot your subjects with ultra wides. It works when it works.
