I bought a mamiya 6 a while ago and am finding that more often than not (although by no means everytime), when loading a film, the arrow on the film backing overshoots the marker in the camera back by about 1 -1 1/2 cm. this leads to me losing about 1/3 of the last shot on the roll ... am I doing something wrong in loading? I load according to the manual and always use ilford films - I've heard of similar problems with Ilford films and hasselblads .....?

thanks in advance

Leon, see Step 5 of Page 17 of the PDF that was supplied by Newsgrunt. The key is to wind slowly until the arrows line up and then stop and close the back and then continue winding.

If you still have a problem after that, then it could be something faulty with the placement of the paper backing of your film batch - this has been known to occur.

Good luck.

thanks for that newsgrunt, but I already have the manual and as I say in my OP - I am loading according to the manual's guidance. IN addition, the wind on lever doesnt ratchet - it will only return after it has completed a full wind, so I cant get around it that way.

thanks for the tip sleepy head - I already have the manual. I guess my question is does it matter if the windon lever is midway through a wind when I shut the back (it wont return in this state)? the manual does not mention this scenario.

sorry, for some reason I thought you said you lost the manual...well I blame the new multi focal glasses

I wind till the arrows line up, then close the back (which has a small pin that I guess sets the counter or something). The advance lever is usually halfway round but I complete the advance after the back is closed and it stops at the first frame. never a problem.

let me waste a frame and see if the lever needs one full go or can ratchet...nope, has to go full wind in one go.

so if I read your original post correctly, you're winding the film a complete advance when loading film and the arrows don't lineup up when you close the back ?

that's probably your problem if that's what you're doing.

Damn those multi-focals :)

yup - that was the problem ... i had some crazy thought that, once the back is closed, the winder has a set number of winds to get to the start of the film, and any half wind would have to be be completed before it starts counting .... I;ve done as you say and it is fine. I guess those folk at Mamiya are more clever than I gave them credit for

thanks for all the help everyone.
