Mamiya sx 28mm infinity focus

I was trying to fix an aperture issue with my new Mamiya SX 28mm lens and ended up screwing up the infinity focus. I've tried starting the thead of the focus ring onto the lens inner body numerous attempting to start the threading in different locations but end up with the same issue. It seems that I can't get the lens to shorten enough to allow infinity focus regardless if I align the aperture ring or not.

Can anyone help?
