does anyone have any tips for what max dpi to use for scanning:
-35mm
-120
-4x5

want to make sure that i am not using too high dpi for the sake of using a high dpi

thanks!

Depends on the scanner being used and for what purpose you are doing the scanning. I know you want a yes/no answer but it's not that simple.

The classic advice for reproduction is 300 dpi x the dimension of the final image in inches. Thus for 4x6 inch/10x15cm you'd need 1200x1800, i.e. near enough 1200 dpi off 35mm or 600 dpi off 6x9cm, but for 12x18 inch/30x45cm you'd need 3600x5400 i.e. 3600 dpi off 35mm or 1800 dpi off 6x9cm. These figures are rounded to what you're likely to be able to set.

Opinions differ as to the point at which you stop scanning 'meaningful information' because opinions differ about what constitutes 'meaningful information' but by 5400 dpi you should be scanning grain detail on most films.

NOTE There was a miscalculation in my original post which is now corrected.
