Memphis is famous for the Blues, BBQ and god knows what else.

But, I need to get in training beyond listening to the Sirius Blues station. Might head over to the Southern Pit BBQ a couple of times and get that taste burned into my taste buds.

What I REALLY want to know is the authentic, genuine ELVIS sandwich recipe for Peanut Butter/Bacon/Banana sandwiches...

Anyone got the real mccoy they can post? When I get to Memphis, I will see how it compares!

BTW, I lost the article about the Chief of Police and someone going to Colorado on E's private plane to share a special PB and Banana sandwich then, flew back to Memphis. Seems that it was made with a loaf of bread sliced end to end, 1 lb. of bacon, bananas, fried or grilled and something else!

Man, that sounds good! Be worth fasting a couple of days for that!😛
 
I lived in Memphis for 4 years and found the barbeque to be highly overrated. The most symbolic expression of this was going to the Nealy's restaurant and being completely, 100% underwhelmed. I'll take Texas BBQ, please, or Sonny's circa 10 years ago.

In Memphis Ruth's Chris is good, The Butcher Shop is great and Pietro on Highway 70 was the best. YMMV.
 
put me down for some 'dry rub'! texas brisket is fine, but tjey cant touch memphis for ribs. make sure you go to mikes for breakfast!

I can attest to the truthfulness of Blake's (known as "Memphis" here on RFF) comments. I went to Memphis and spent a day and night with him. He knows where to go and where to eat. Plus I think he knows most of the interesting people in town.

If you cannot get a pass to Graceland (it is expensive) just drive by on Elvis Presley Blvd. so you can see a block of t-shirt and souvenir shops, all owned by Elvis' estate.

Go on the Sun Records tour, even if you have to pay. Ditto Stax Records. That is real Memphis.
 
I wanted to get to the commissary when I was down there and didn't, much to my regret!

Memphis the Neely's place wasnt the only BBQ joint I went too. It was just symbolic lol.

There was a place on 64 called Tango and Murphs that rivaled the Texas stuff, but closed down maybe a year after I moved to Memphis.

I was also disappointed when Blue Plate Cafe went out of business. Not great food, but I did always like the atmosphere.
