Anyone use Microdol-X lately?

I thinking of shooting some Plus-X or Ilford Pan F at night, long exposures probably several minutes. I'd like to hold down on the contrast and grain. Microdal was good at holding down down grain.

I just picked up a gallon of Microdol-X to use with some of my older-type B&W emulsions. Like, I have outdated 70mm Plus-X, which could benefit from the solvent, soft-working qualities of that particular developer. Or, at least, I am thinking that 🙂


I was looking in an old Peterson's Book at some of Annie Leibovitz's old stuff from her Nikon F (Rolling Stone) days, shot with Tri-X, pushed, and obviously overexposed, in Microdol-X. Looks great to me, really like the grain quality with that film. The Chinese Era 100 should work good with that film, since it's alot like retro EI100 old school Tri-X Pan IMHO. I'm hoping a similar, gritty, "look", in medium-speed.

And, I will also be trying some of my 120 Ilford Pan-F with the Microdol-X. Ilford's version of it was called "Perceptol", which I have also used, it's similar to Microdol-X in many respects.

I need to get some Microdol-X Replenisher, since his developer stores well, long term.

I'd recommend Acros for long night shots vs. either of those film choices, especially for the reason you mention, but perhaps even more so for Acros' wonderful lack of reciprocity failure.
