Not sure in which forum to put this, but since the lens is SM . . .

So, the usual story . . . stumbled on a listing for one of these and would like to know about pros, cons, pricing.

Tried to search the archives on this and found a lot of stuff about 45mm SLR lenses.

Colucci and Nakamura mention it, but do not provide details. Feel free to point me to any URLs that I missed.

Anyone here used/using one of these?

I understand the cameras for which they were originally made have very unreliable shutters so the lenses are likely orphans.

I am afraid I don't know much about them either, other than that they exist and are rare as hen's teeth. See them from time to time on eBoy - I mark them, but they always get too rich for my blood right away. More often, I see the Rokkor 135mm, which goes for a tad less than a gazillion dollars.

Most people think you mean the lenses for the CL/CLE, which are M-Mount, but I know what you mean.

You might not be aware of this, but Pentax made one too. 43mm f1.9. Ultra-rare, made of pure unobtainium. Konica had a 60mm f1.2 - WOWZER!

I dream about finding things like this at a garage sale for a quarter. Yeah, right!

Of course there are a gazillion Japanese and German (and British and American) LTM clone lenses. But in answer to your question (sorry, got carried away), I don't know much about the Minolta LTM lenses - performance or so on. I imagine they're worth more for their collector value (sadly) than as shooters. But you never know!

Garage sale

Garage sale

"pure unobtainium" - LOL!!

OK, now you've done it. I'm going to tell the garage sale story.

Bob (not his real name) was the Prez of a local amateur photo group back in the 80's. His wife Barb is a garage sale/thrift store maven. Forever calling Bill at his office about junque she finds when making her rounds.

One day, Bill's phone rings. Barb says, "I think this is a nice one. Big, real leather case, camera inside is heavy. Says 'Linhof' on it. A couple of lenses and other stuff. They're asking $250." Bill takes a deep breath, says, "Offer $200 but pay the $250 if they don't go for it." They went for it.

At home after work, Bill surveys his new toy. Turns out to be a beautiful Linhof field camera outfit in perfect working order.

But wait, there's more.

After he hauls out all the Linhof gear it turns out the case has a 'false' bottom. Of course he lifts it up and stares, dumbfounded at a lovely little Leica M3 kit, complete with three lenses, finders, etc.

Even now I recall that story and stop at the occasional garage sale. It's the equivalent of buying a lotto ticket every now and then. Like my buddy Terry used to say, "If you don't play, you can never even hope to win."

I must confess, I stole the 'unobtainium' phrase - it's been around for awhile. But I do like it, so I use it when I can...hehehe.

As to the Linhof - I just wish that sort of thing would happen to me. If it were MY wife calling me, I'd tell her to buy it, she'd do it, we'd get it home and find a broken GAF Viewmaster inside a lovely Linhof box. And inside the hidden door, we'd find evidence of a violent crime - like a hand or something.

I'm just happy with the little things. Recently found a lens on eBoy that was labeled 'Bittco Super Vemar'. Got it for cheap minimum bid. Turns out to be a Kyoei Super Acall 135mm f3.5 LTM lens - new - appears never to have been used. Nice! But that knowledge saved me maybe $25 in price - that's a 'win' in my book!

I have a 45/2.8 Super Rokkor & it's a good lens. I think the design may be a Heliar-type, but regardless it delivers the goods, is very compact, & looks kind of cool w/its funky scalloped focus ring. IME, they aren't that rare or pricey as they were the standard lens on many of the Minolta semi-LTM cameras (they use LTM lenses, but film size is 32x24, kind of like the early Nikon RFs) & can often be found together w/the bodies for < $200.

Some more info on the cameras:

BTW, I also have a 50/2.8 Super Rokkor & it has been an excellent slow lens.
