Hey all,

For the past year or so I've been using my school's darkroom and chemicals to develop my film, etc. Well, I've started to want to buy my own chemicals and mix them so that I can start experimenting with different developers, etc.

Anyway I've gotten myself quite confused.

I never did well with chemistry in grade school so I'm in need of some help.

So far I've only used developers of 1:9 such as sprint developers, etc. For that it was simple. We had 2,000ML graduates so I would fill my graduates to 1800ML of water and the extra 200ML with the developer.

Quite simple...

However now I'm looking at developers such as rodinal which is a 1:25 developer. This i am totally confused on.

For a 1:25 developer... say if you use 2,000ml of water, I would use 80ml of developer (rodinal)?

Is that right?

Are the specific graduate ranges that would make it easier for me? I'm no math person either so this is where I get confused.

When I develop film I mainly use a 4-5 reel tank. A 2000ML tank usually fills that with extra left over.

Also, what about fixers, stop baths, etc. These chemicals apparently seem to need to be dilluted with water as well.

I'm just really confused. Most of the "how to guides" i've seen for developing dont really go into the aspects of the mixing of fixers and stop baths into water and the rest. Any help would be super appreciated.

Any suggestions on what types of graduates to use?

For the most part I'm planning on buying 1 liter bottles of all of my chemicals for the time being. So 1 liter of developer, fixer, stop bath, etc.

Most of these 1 liters make about a gallon or so of fixer or stop bath from what I've gathered.

Help help i'm so confused with all of this chemistry and mixing. oy.

The chemist in me would get a 2L volumetric flask and a 100 ml graduated
cylinder. For the 1:25 you add the two numbers in the ratio (1+25) and
divide into the total: 2000/(1+25) = 77ml developer. Measure the 77 ml
in the 100 graduated cylinder, add to the 2L volumetric flask, then fill
the flask to the mark to make 2L of diluted developer.

Yes that is it.
2000ml at once, are you developing a lot?

For Rodinal it means 1 pat developer + 25 parts water - 80ml Rodinal + 2,000 Water
You'll need a graduate cylinder or a large syringe to measure the amounts quite precisely.

Keep a 10ml and a 50ml syringe handy to cover most development tank sizes
