Modern 50/2.8 in LTM : 100 buyers needed

I want a company to built new soviet lenses. I would love a Jupiter 8 that actually had to go through quailty control, + some clicks on the fstop ring.

$1000 for an elmar is a little crazy though.

50mm/f2.8 in LTM for a grand US? ... how many Industars 61/LD will that amount of moola buy?

Why is it crazy? It's the finest 50mm I've ever used, and it would be great to have it in screwmount if I were a screwmount person.

I agree, Richard. If that's what you really want, a $1000 is a fair price.

I would love to, but if I had $1000 and spent it on a lens... Well, remember the old Who song "My Wife"?

That said, if I could I would.

I'm still not used to Leica prices. I'm hoping to buy a Barnack-something [IIIa, IIIb, IIIc, IIIf,] have it CLA'd and pick up a decent lens for well under $1000. JH

I can pick up a mintish 50 Elmar (new version) for $500 give or take a sawbuck. I can't imagine it would cost me another $500 to have an LTM rear mount machined to swap out the M mount. Then again it wouldn't come in a gilt-edged box with velvet lining and a lifetime membership certificate from Dr. Spichtig in Leicaholics Anonymous :D

Yes, they go for about $750 new, so this would only be about $250 more for a custom screwmount version. They are priced fairly low (for Leica  ) because of the simple Tessar-type structure, much less complicated than the usual double-Gausss designs. However, careful redesign, good glass, and close tolerances have made this latest Elmar a real winner. Maybe f/2.8 is not considered lightning fast, but high speed isn't everything to everybody, and one wouldn't want a Tessar to be much faster than that anyhow.

Not the lens that I'd choose given the money and the complications involved.

A modern collapsible Summicron might be attractive.

In the first place the new price of $750 is not worth it for that lens IMO when you can get the one from a single generation back (still M) for about $300-400 in MINT condition---supposedly pretty much identical---I love mine. Then use that guy in Japan to change it to screw-mount for about $400 or so. No need to wait for 999 other people, and I sincerely doubt you'll find them anyway---actually you'll likely need to find way more than that as many will drop out when it comes time to pony up the bucks.

Actually, he's looking for 100 people, not 1,000. Perhaps you're getting confused with the $1,000 price tag.
