who uses a monopod or a tripod consistently?
i think it would make for sharper images but so far have not taken up the habit myself.
thinking my monopod might be doable for me.

I take my mono on trips, where it doubles as a walking staff. Helpful for other cameras certainly. With the high ISO capability of the XE1, I haven't felt compelled to use it yet (in situations where it would be necessary for a leaf shutter with 1/500 max, or m43 where anything over ISO 800 is iffy).

I like using a tripod, makes it so much easier to get the shots I want. 30 second exposure? No problem. But I can rarely be bothered to take it, so I use one once or twice a year.

you could try the "tension monopod" rope trick before getting into mono or tripods

Re 'tension monopod' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaEwcDFiELQ I could see its usefulness with panning but also its limitations for long exposures. And it fits in your pocket...

I use a monopod when walking off road. Like Robert, I find my Benbo a very capable walking stick.
One tip that may be superfluous: I use a quick release head and standardise that fitting across all my supports. Speeds things up no end and makes it more likely I will use a support.

what?
I have a monopod and put a ball head on it. Tried and tried to get some use out of it, but it just doesn't work for me. If the stability is that important for the shot, it's worth a tripod, IMO.

I use monopods with my Sigma DP's, especially the 1 with its f4 lens.
Tripods for the rare night shot with anything.

From what I know about your style of shooting (street) and your small compact cameras, I'd suggest keeping it light and tight. I'd just recommend a mini or table tripod (Leitz, Manfrotto, RRS) or velbon ultra stick monopod. (You'll probably want a small head for the monopod, too.)
But, this is all just more junk and I'd prefer to do without them (...and bags, ...and straps).

Used a monopod for a 90mm on my M6 to shoot a friend's wedding(indoors on a dark Dutch winter morning). Made the difference and was very manageable. Might suit your Market stall shoots Joe?

I always use a mono-pod to photograph GKs football and soccer games and whenever the situation warrants its use....there is always a tripod and mono-pod in the truck just in case.....pinhole photography is a favorite of mine hence the tripod.....I also carry the small Leica mini tripod with ball head ...a great piece of equipment very handy....regards,Bill

back alley, You're asking here in the X-Pro1 forum... I use rangefinders, but I have little use for tripod or other camera support with these cameras.
For shooting birds, landscapes, artwork, or macro, I might very well want camera support, but then I'd probably be using a different type of camera.
