MP Leicas still being made?

My worst nightmare: by the time I've saved up enough moolah, they won't have any more. I figure by December, I can plop down the cash for a black one. Leica is still making them, right?
 
Don't worry, you can always purchase a Mint used one and save a bundle of cash! Most Leica owners would never expose thier cameras to even the slightest possibility of a nick or scratch and Mint virtually unused examples are for sale every day.-Dick

Dear Dick,

Leica's own estimate is that about 50% of Leica owners baby their cameras and the other 50% just use them. You ought to see my MP black paint, which I've had from new...

Roger answered your question, but coincidentally, the same question has popped up on the Leica Forum. Stefan Daniel, of Leica, answered "I have followed the lively discussion on the production of the analog Leica MP and M7 models with great interest. I am therefore, just for once, joining the discussion directly. To put it clearly, we shall continue to produce the analog M as before. With the success of digital photography, volumes have naturally fallen, but in the last two years they have stabilized well, so that further production is economical."

You wouldn't call it a cash cow but there are no tooling costs so it is a parts & assembly operation that as Stefan Daniel says has good economics. I think they'll continue to make the M7 and MP.
 
It's comforting to know that "further production is economical," with no more expenditures needed for tooling costs, r&d, etc. I baby my Leicas, and I use them regularly without a nick or a scratch. That's a skill in itself! Roger, I saw yours....takes my breath away. And should the Leica boogy man buys the whole lot, I can always ask nicely for the one under the counter =)

I am also saving for an MP, but I have decided to keep my eyes out for a good used one once I have the cash. Tony at Popflash had a few users last month that were in decent condition, the only thing was they were stamped with "Brooks Institute" on the top of the camera. That wouldn't bother me, especially since they were selling for $2100. If i would have had the cash available at the time, I would be out shooting with it now instead of posting!
