I recently learned about the late photographer Dave Heath by reading his obituary. I was fascinated by the photographs that accompanied the obituary, so I bought the photobook Multitude, Solitude, the Photographs of Dave Heath. Heath, an acclaimed master printmaker, was also exemplary for his generation's street photography. His darkroom work involved very drastic dodging and burning and bleaching, a la W. Eugene Smith, and his prints are often very dramatic as a result. After studying the book, I wanted to sort out my thoughts about him and to compare his print manipulations with Steve McCurry's drastic photoshopping that has caused much recent controversy. My efforts resulted in a book review which Tom Stansworth has kindly published on his blog The Photo Fundamentalist. The book is currently available, and if the subject interests you, you might want to follow up by reading my review. You can access it at
