Hi

I have been using film M cameras for many years but today I got my first digital M, a very clean M8 from RG Lewis in London.

I will be using it mostly with my 35mm non aspheric Summilux and sometimes with a 21/4 Cosina Voightländer

My question is, how do I handle lens coding for these lenses or can I safely set lens recognition to 'off' ?

Thanks

Congrats. I just got my first digital Leica 2 weeks ago. Also an M8
So far I am getting great results with a 40mm summicron, not coded.
I am mainly shooting b&w and the results are great. The camera is dream to use.

Hi, nice camera!!!

The lens coding only takes effect if the lens has the codes, if theyr are not, then set lens recognition off, BTW if works only on jpegs, on raw files it does not, so don´t worry.

IR cut filters are mandatory when shooting colour.

Enjoy!

Try shooting with an infrared filter and you can get some amazing results out of the M8! If you want to code the 21mm yourself there are many how to's around the net. Use a sharpie and mark it in the right spot. It is my understanding that coding will help with the vignette and distortion. I don't know if this is only in jpeg or not.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm planning on getting a UV/IR filter today.

Opinions seem to vary on whether to use it for B&W work, with strong recommendations for both yes and no.

Any thoughts?

Had an M8. No need for UV/IR filters for mono images, in my opinion. Always handy to have on or two in case the sudden urge to shoot colour comes across you, though.
