i've been wanting to try a wrist strap but didn't want to buy one see how it might work. so i made my own, using soviet strap sold by fedka. it was way to short for a neck strap. it held the cam sternum high; i like mid-belly high.
so, i folded the strap at what i thought might be a generous wrist strap length and cut off an end. i then drilled a hole of the same diameter as the factory one, and made a slit of about the same length as the factory one. the stud is JUST long enough to hold three layers of strap. voila! a sturdy strap for testing. so far, i like enough strap to hold in my hand while the strap is on my wrist. could be i'll make it shorter later on. here are pics:
i reckon i could add a nice, colorful line wrap once i have settled on a length, in lieu of the stud ...

Nice one, Paul! Luigi is getting nervous!
If you want to add a 'slider' on the strap that cinches it up around your wrist, a small rubber O-ring might do it (although not as sexy as a handmade leather one).

Paul, looks good!
You can get a rubber o-ring from Home Depot and use it to slide up and down to tighten when you need it. That is what Gordy uses on his, but your strap is more elegant and might need a classier solution.

Good stuff, Paul.
Is there a chance that the strap can open and cause the camera to drop?

no way, Raid. the slit would have to be pulled open while holding the camera. the weight of the cam keeps the stud in the holes away from the slit. it looks a little dicey in that one pic because i hadn't pulled the strap to completely seat the stud. i could do away with the stud and use a waxed linen string wrap. i may try to make one from scratch with leather ribbon, which is now available at hobby lobby ...

Or you can use red thread. Like I did when I made my Gordy knock-off.
