Something interesting arrived in the mail yesterday

An early Plaubel Makina I with 3-element Anticomar 100mm f/2.9 in a dial-set Compur shutter and with a roll film adapter. It has been upgraded with a rangefinder, likely somewhere after 1935.

Slow shutter speeds are slightly off, but nothing a little TLC shouldn't fix.

Thanks Hans,

I'm still working on putting together a 1930s journalist look. ;)
Are you going to the "Santa Fe" event in Overloon again this year?

Is it really *THAT* bad Roger?
'Fraid so. You know that 'glassy' look you get when you enlarge a box camera shot more than about 2x-3x? Well, it's like that. Only of course a lot faster. I've owned two and borrowed a third, and they were all that bad. Mt friends' experiences have been no better. But, of course, a 3x enlargement is still about 16x24cm, and you get that lovely MF tonality.

Cheers,

R.

Alright, thanks for the input Roger, :)

I wonder if it is the same for the younger 4-element version of the lens as well.

Cheers Roger.

I'll be sure to share the results when I get round to feeding some film through it.
To be honest, as I have a number cameras and lenses from the same period in my collection; I'm usually not disappointed with sharpness or other particular lens characteristics of these things.

Johan; "From my cold dead hands" ;)

For your purposes, Rick, the lens would do just fine I think :)
I once took pictures of a re-enactor with a Sonnar 80mm when I still had my Hassy.

Sharp as a tack, but it's lacking in authenticity.

Welcome to the wonderful Makina world. I am a big fan of this system, and enjoy a nice set which is fairly complete - only one lens missing. I even have the focal plane shutter which is somewhat rare.

I hear a lot of people to blame the Anticomar. The f/4.2 version is regarded as better than the f/2.9. I'll have to do a side by side comparison. Pity some people has had bad luck with theirs. Others are luckier.

My IIIR, I love 50's

Oh, by the way! yours looks like a dial-set Makina II, early because of the dial-set and the round RF window. Could it be, or is it obvious that RF unit is a later addition?

That's a great looking camera, Rick. I don't see many Plaubels around these parts. You should fit right in at the reenactments.
