Hi guys,

My site re-design is very nearly done, and any commentary you've got as I apply the finishing touches (still waiting for my bio to be written) would be appreciated. It's on my Mac right now, but not at my domain, so here's a link: http://www.andrewmurphy.ca

For those interested: of the 46 photos presented, 42 were made with rangefinders (34 with an M camera, six with a Canonet QL-17 GIII, one with an Olympus XA, and one with a Konica Hexar AF); two with SLRs (one with a Contax RTS and one with an Nikon F90x); and two with a Holga (one with a stock lens and one modded for close-up work.)

Thanks.

Edit: it's live now, so th elink above now goes to my domain, and not the test site.

I love your work and the site it very well done, simple but effective. One suggestion though, add rollovers to the arrows bellow the grid of pictures on the right, so that it is easier to realize they are clickable.

Awesome work.

Thanks very much, Doug. Good point about the arrows; I'll take care of it.

Nice pics! I like the setup. It would be cool (for me) if the pics were just a little bigger.

The toggle arrows under the groups of photos don't move me to the next group of pics - I had to click on one, two, three...

I really like your portraits.

Thanks very much, Kevin. What browser are you using? I've heard no complaints about the arrows from others, yet. I may consider making the photos a little bigger, as well.

Great work. I agree about seeing larger main photos, but I like the thumbnail size. Arrows work just fine for me in Safari.

Yo, ManGo: ditch IE, for it is crap.

Arrows work fine in Opera 8.01. And I like 'em as they are - but I'm the freak who despises rolly-overy-lighty-uppy buttons.

My personal preference would be to have the full-size photos 'stick' until you bring up a new one, rather than flash in and out as you mouse over and off.

Otherise, it's nice and clean and simple. Does the job well. I tend to prefer black as the background colour for photos (especially B/W), but again that is my personal preference rather than any sensible comment to be taken note of :D

So, I like it.

Thanks, guys. the main photos will get a bit bigger, for sure. I'll see if I can make the arrows work in IE, too, though I'm firmly of the opinion that no-one should use it.

Mark, I'll make the big ones stick, too.

Looks great to me. Love the minimal layout, great photos as well. Didn't know you were a rudeboy, I've been a rudie since 1981 (Specials, Selector, etc).

One touch I especially like is the way you've centered the frame on the thumbnails on your subject, effectively cropping to keep context while reducing the display, when you mouseover, you get the uncropped photo - clean, sweet. You'll have to tell me how you did that.

I'm running Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog Linux w/Firefox 1.07 and everything is a-ok.

"Dem a-loot, dem a-shoot, dem a-wail..." That's just about when it hit me, too, and I just get ruder as time goes on. For lunch today I'm having a jerk pork roti.

Thanks a lot, Bill. The centering was easy: I just set a 75px square crop, and moved it around as I liked till I got just the composition I wanted for the thumb, and used a full crop for the bigger version.

Nice pics..

my suggestion for the site would be to bring the thumbnails and the fullsize pics closer together. I'm on a 1024 display and I would need to maximize my browser window to see both regions in the same screen. I'd say make the entire page width: 800pixels.

Ah, so you cropped the photos, did you? Here and I thought you did something tricky in the Javascript. Well, then, that's good. I'm more of a XML/XHTML/CSS guy than a JavaScript guy, but I think I gotta get more into the client side. You've done well! How does it validate XHTML and CSS-wise?

If you ever decide to check out the early and authentic ska sound, may I suggest:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000003QHA/103-6657601-5935025?v=glance&n=5174

I have this on LP from my early days with ska, and it is terrific. Wish I had gotten a CD copy when they were easily available. Not great recordings, mind you - pretty primitive. But great sounds.

Using Internet Exploder. Running the mouse cursor over the pictures makes them pop up correctly, just like on your old site. However, I cannot get your left/right scroll arrows to work UNLESS I right-click on the scroll arrow and Open Link In New Window. Only then does the next page appear.

The pop-up pictures could stand to be a little bigger; perhaps an extra 10 or 15%? As far as viewing the layout, I'm also using a 1024 pixels-wide setting, but I invariably view everything maximized with auto-hiding toolbars and no margin or header/footer clutter, so it looks and acts fine for me.

You already know what I think of your pictures.

Now. Whom would I have to kill to get the codes for your old site layout?

Thanks again, all.

I've made a few changes based on your input: the large images are now stickier, and larger, too.

Excellent pics! You really connected with your subjects.

Your site looks good using Mozilla 1.7.12 on my iMac.

On a different computer now, but with the same version of Internet Exploder. Scroll arrows now work as intended.

Your e-mail address is also showing up as a hot link, now. It was strictly copy-and-paste on my other computer, though I thought that was intentional. I must presume you revised it.
