I am finished with version 1 of my "Religion - South Apopka" slide show with music recorded at one of the churches. This represents about six months of photography almost every Sunday, a few Saturdays and a few week days. I only have it on YouTube as I am still figuring out how to put it directly on my website.

You can see it here.

The purpose of this is for an exhibit at our local history museum. It will play continuously on a 15" digital photo frame.

It was a real PITA to learn how to edit audio and to learn how to make a slide show with music exportable as an MP4. Now I think I need it to be in Flash instead to put it so it plays directly on my web site.

Outstanding Bob. Your photo's are fantastic. I felt I was in the auditorium. Music was a nice addition to the slide show. I just blogged about local churches in my area. I've thought of doing this but felt I might get in the way. I'd be interested to read how you overcame this if it was an obstacle to you.
I'm a white dude but not a stranger to attending black churches of worship.

Greg: I just met with the Pastors (or Bishops) before the service the first time and explained what I was doing. By the second visit, I was just fitting right in. I am just old friends now. It may help that I stop by some of the churches on Saturdays to have a rib sandwich to help their fund raisers. (For those not from the south, a rib sandwich is a couple of slices of white bread with 4-5 juicy pork ribs on top all drizzled with BBQ sauce)

Those church people joke that us white guys got no rhythm but they get me moving during the service.

Very impressive documentary! Well seen, well depicted and your stark style fits it perfectly. If I were you, Bob, I wouldn't limit it to South Apopka only... It can be maintained as an ongoing project, to cover similar communities as well; possibly statewide. To me, it was more than a religion; it was the reflection of a unique culture exclusive to some portions of the States. This project, IMHO, is worth to work on.

Regards,

Bob

Bob, you nailed it! That was a lot of work and I know they really appreciated it as much as I did!😎

BTW, you can embed the YouTube in a web site or blog as far as I know. Maybe someone more geekish can chime in here.

Dave, I have learned that "embedding" a YouTube video in a web site is no more than a link that takes the viewer to YouTube to see the video. Someone please tell me if I am doing this wrong and there is more to it than I am getting.

Hmmm...I see a lot of blogs with them without a link. You just click and watch. Wonder if websites are different than blogs?

Very nice work, Bob. I've spent some time in my Mom's church, which is mostly African American Pentacostal, and you captured it really well. Nice eye for detail, for some reason I really loved the shot of the older gentleman with head raised and a tambourine in his hand, and the funeral photo at the end.

great stuff...

The only suggestion I might make is to vary the audio a bit and include a little preaching and before/after service ambient conversation. But you're right in that audio is a lot harder than it looks. (LOL)

That's great simple advice Bob. I just need to go. Since I got sick with this inner ear inflamation & been out of work I've had time to take walks in my neighborhood. I was thinking yesterday of what a recluse I've become. I didn't like seeing myself in this way. I'm going to determine to get out in the community & photograph what I see. Keep my eyes & heart open for a project to focus on. Go to help support fund raisers. Very timely that you posted this...thanks!

BTW We might look silly doing it, but we can get down with the rhythm.😀
