While walking down a city sidewalk, my neck strap just released itself from my camera body (M3), I caught my camera within an inch or two of the pavement. In 40 years of shooting, I have never had that happen.

Sounds like a tremendous catch. This can mean one of two things.

A) This is a long-awaited sign from the gods that you should finally go for a professional baseball career.
B) You are in fact some sort of secret samurai, like the girl who catches the falling cup in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

its good to know you unleash your super catch ability to save that innocence M3.

can you take a photo of the strap so we can avoid it.

I keep telling people, but apparently no one listens. Velcro on the strap and velcro on the epaulettes or nape of your shooting shirt, jacket or vest. If the ring, clip or whatever attaching the strap to the camera fails, the velcro will keep the strap from sliding off and the camera will simply dangle by the other end of the strap.
It has happened to me a couple of times with heavy motor-driven SLR cameras as well as lighter rangefinders, without any problems or broken gear.

Wow, nice catch. If it were me, instead of catching it I would have probably accidently booted it down the street mid-stride.

Ha ha... me too!

I check my strap before donning my camera -- every time.

I also check that my lens cap is off (but I probably should have saved that for another thread that is sure to happen again.) ;)

yes good reflexes. its fascinating how our brains work and "act now, think later" mode switches on automatically.
