I recently lucked upon a very well preserved Tower 3S (same as Nicca 3S, a copy of the Leica III) with a Nikkor-H 50/2 LTM lens (the main reason behind the purchase). However, the lens seems to be quite an unusual sample and has me a bit baffled, and stuck trying to figure out appropriate filter and hood sizing. It is chrome and has a black ring with the aperture settings at the end of the barrel, and three knurled rings, one for setting the aperture and two on the focusing ring. It has a focusing tab and an infinity lock. The beauty ring is black throughout, and has a groove dividing it into concentric rings, the inner about 38mm diameter OD, the outer about 39mm ID and 43mm OD. There appears to be threading for a filter on the inner surface of the outer ring, but a 39E filter would not thread. A 38mm push-on series VI filter adapter is just a hair to tight for the inner rim . The 50/2 is supposed to take 40.5 mm filters, but this lens clearly does not. I looked all through the sections on the 50/2 in the current edition of Robert Rotoloni's Rangefinder System book, but do not find anything that matches this particular lens in appearance, nor does he describe anything that seems to match this particular sample. For whatever it may be worth, the serial number is 745093, and the lens is coated. No cap or hood was included, and nothing in my collection of random caps and hoods fit this sample. Who knows, maybe Sears was customizing lenses for Nikon, or more likely, vice versa, but why, and why do there not seem to be others like it in the Big Book?
Has anybody out there come across this particular variant of the 50/2 before? Anybody know anything about it? And anybody know what size of anything I can use for this lens? A push-on adapter for the outside of the lens is not an option as it will obscure the aperture scale.
Pictures attached, certainly worth more than my thousand words.
Hoping for enlightenment,
Larry

It's missing the chrome filter ring. They screw right off on the Nikkor-H 50/2. Looks normal to me other than that.

Well, that certainly makes sense. Thanks for the insight--and clearly explains why there should not be an identical lens (or fragment of a lens) pictured in the big book. So now for the big question: who has a chrome filter ring laying around that they don't want?
