As a boy my father gave me a rangefinder folder, which I used for a few years. I can't recall many details except that it was large (probably 6x9 format negatives). An angled view of it closed is shown here. It looks something like Zeiss Ikons that I've seen online, but I haven't found a match yet. Black bellows, with front folding down to form base.

Can anyone identify plausible candidates?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's it, seeing the additional pictures. I recall the shutter release in particular.
 
Yes, the body mounted shutter release was definitely a step up from the standard lens mounted affair on some early folders. I also recall that you had to slide the entire viewing assembly to the left in order to open/release the drop down lens bed/cover. I had one years ago in pretty rough shape which is how I recognized yours :D
