To infinity and beyond!
Well, I went out on a limb and purchased a budget ball had for my $5 Star-D tiltall clone tripod. I'm outfitting this tripod to give to a friend, so I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money.
I ended up buying the Triopo RS3 ball head, paid 43.99 with free shipping and its coming from Poland. This appears to be the same thing as the Redged RP3 that Adorama sells.
It has a massive 36mm ball, big for its price range, alloy construction. No quick release plate included, bu has 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 attachment. Single knob pan/tilt/lock adjustment and a 90* slot for quick portrait shots. They boast it has 44lbs capacity (20kg) and 99lbs of locking force (45kg).
I just ordered it today, so I will evaluate it once it gets here. My friend has only a Nikon D3100, so its not even close to what this head is reportedly capable of, but I will test its real world claims.
This could be a good entry level ball head for a broad range of cameras, I'm looking forward to testing it out. Haven't seen any reviews out there for this one or the Redged brand.

LOL Bob. I actually bought one of these myself just to try out. I recently got a tripod with an articulating center column and wanted a ballhead that has just one control for panning, friction and orientation. AFAIK this Triopo has the biggest diameter ball in that category. I've had it about a month and it's OK. It will reliably lock heavy loads as they claim, but as you can imagine it's not exactly an A-S Z1.

I've never gotten along with ball heads, I'm a 3-way guy.
