I stopped by the local Walmart tonight, trying once again (in vain) to pick up a couple of rolls of Kodak Gold 100 (they just don't seem to stock it anymore - 200/400/800, yes, but no 100).

Could not find what I wanted, but just as I was grabbing yet another 4-pack of Fujicolor Superia XTRA 400, I saw this:

Fujicolor True Definition 400

Grabbed a three-pack, thought I'd give it a whirl. But what is it? Anybody see anything except press releases on it yet? Anyone tried any?

It almost looks like this could be repackaged Fuji NPH, since Kodak recently released 400 UC as consumer film. If so, cool!

Anyway, I'll try to shoot some up tomorrow, let you know how it goes.

Best Regards,

This must be one of the 5 new Fuji films I heard of. Supposed to be really new, not pro-gone-consumer.

I love NPH too for its very lifelike colors and broad range of detail (lower contrast). I hope this new film is close to it for less $$$.

I shot Kodak UC400 travelling in Vietnam in the fall. It was very good (accurate colours, reasonable grain), but I would probably stick to NPH in the future.

Well, I got off three rolls of the stuff this weekend - I'll try to get some developed and scanned for y'all this week sometime. Did some available-light portraits and some nature shots. We'll see!

Got some of this stuff for miscellaneous family pics as well and must say I'm fairly pleased so far. It looks to have less saturation and contrast than the typical consumer films..I'm a fan of the Fuji NXX films for work stuff...but some skin tones may get a little magenta/pink. I haven't tried artificial or mixed lighting or flash yet but I have high hope based on my first two rolls.
I'm attaching an available light shot that semmed to handle my daughters very fair skin pretty well. Leica M6/ Canon 50/1.8(a rather low contrast lens...but I like it), EI 400, printed on Kodak paper on a Noritsu, YMMV. It may look darker on Safari...IE and Firefox show it more true to the print.

I just found an old camera bag of mine filled with unopened boxes of Kodak Gold 200. 12 exposures and the box says develop before 04/90! 😀

Do you think it would still be good?

Try one and tell us!
My guess is that the speed will be down by 1 stop (about) and the colors will be all over the place, but it can be fun for portraits/macro

That depends upon the storage conditions. The only way to really know is to expose a roll and have it processed. If you do, let us know how it goes. 🙂

Well....it WAS the official film of the 1988 Olympic games...so it can't be that bad. I will shoot a roll next week and see what happens. I always did like this film.

When I find some expired color film (no matter if it's print or slide), I shoot some gaudy Eggleston type stuff and have the lab cross-process it.

Eggleston's exposure system with color film: just overexpose the damn thing. 😀
i love his stuff.

Thanks! I can find it online readily enough - I just like to buy it locally at my Walgreens or what have you - none of them seem to want to carry it anymore. I talked to Kodak, they claim not to have any knowledge of this - they say they still make it and ever buddy still uses it, etc.

I really appreciate your posting the link, though - thanks!
