Just fyi,
especially for those photographers in North America:
Fujifilm North America has just introduced a complete new 3-film pack of Superia X-Tra 400. New packaging units with new design.
I think you only invest in new packagings if you want to serve a market in the long term.

Also already available at B&H for example. It's very cheap:

Personally I prefer Superia 400 to Ultramax 400, because of Superias finer grain, higher resolution, lower price and - to my individual taste - more pleasing color rendition.

Cheers, Jan

I love using this film for street work. Silver Efex works well with it for b&w. I picked up 100 rolls of the Industrial 400 version (same film) when I was in Tokyo the first time back in 2015...used about 15 rolls while there.

For anyone who likes a gritty b&w street look....Superia 400...rated at 1600 with a 1 stop push and run thru Silver Efex....magic.

I wouldn’t read too much into the new packaging. Acros 100 got newly designed box together with some other Fuji films a few years back. Same story was told back then that those are the films that have long and bright future ahead of them because Fuji surely wouldn’t invest THAT much money to change colours on the box...

Great news though, 3-packs haven’t been available for a while in Europe. Lets hope this doesn’t stay US thing only. Great film for incredibly low price.

I actually already bought 2 of these packs at a Walmart in Colorado when I was on vacation and didn't bring enough C41. I would have liked to support the local photo store, but they were charging $13 a roll for portra and $10 a roll for fuji C200.

Hm, a complete new packing design specifically for a regional market?
Makes only economic sense if this market is big and important enough......I wouldn't be surprised if the North American market is still the biggest regional market for CN films. Maybe in 5-10 years it will be China.....

Weird. Fujifilm announced on their Japanese language website on October 6, 2017 that they were discontinuing Superia X-TRA 400 (link here) with final shipments from the factory of 135-36 x 3 packs expected to be in March 2018. Its still possible to buy the film locally, but for how much longer is anybody's guess. Fuji Gyomu (Industrial) 400, which is the same film in budget packaging, has already disappeared in Japan (except for price gougers flipping the leftovers).

Weird. Fujifilm announced on their Japanese language website on October 6, 2017 that they were discontinuing Superia X-TRA 400 (link here) with final shipments from the factory of 135-36 x 3 packs expected to be in March 2018.

Most probably that refers to the old 3-Pack packaging.
As this film is also the film inside all the Fujifilm single use cameras - still a huge market globally in the 7-digit area - I think it's unlikely that it is discontinued as film. Fujifilm Europe has also told me that Superia X-Tra 400 remains in production.

Here in Europe Superia X-Tra 400 has always been easily available. In normal one-film boxes, and currently most online distributors also have attractively priced 10 film packs (10 boxes in foil).

Cheers, Jan

Jan, no it doesn't. The Japanese page I linked states that the replacement for SUPERIA X-TRA 400 36 3-packs is SUPERIA PREMIUM 400 36 3-packs. Both of these films have been available for some time locally. The X-TRA variant has gotten the chop, and the PREMIUM variant (with a premium price) remains.

The link you've posted only lists 3- and 5-packs of Superia X-Tra 400 as discontinued. But not the normal single packs.

Is there a real difference between Superia X-Tra 400 and Superia Premium 400?
To my knowledge its the same film, but just different names for different markets: X-Tra for Europe and America, Premium for Japan (and Asia).

Cheers, Jan

Jan, you're persistent lol 😀

The link I posted doesn't say anything about 5-packs of Superia 400 X-TRA. The announcement of the discontinuation of Superia X-TRA 400 5-packs (and 2-packs) was on July 29, 2016 (link here). I forget when the discontinuation notice for single rolls was, but that was even earlier. Single rolls in Japan are long gone. The ONLY currently available option locally is Superia X-TRA 400 in 3-packs, and the discontinuation notice for that was the one I mentioned in my first post in this thread. In Japan, Superia X-TRA 400 is history.

As for PREMIUM 400, iirc the advertising when it was released said it was Japan-only film designed to render Asian skin tones more accurately. I've never used it though because its been expensive from its release and I'm a cheapskate when it comes to film 😛

Jan, you're persistent lol 😀

I just want to figure out what the real situation is.....🙂.
So, what facts do we have now:

- Superia X-Tra 400 is now available in North America in new designed 3-Packs
- it is also available in Europe in single packs and 10-Packs (foil)
- in Japan the situation is different with Superia 400 Premium as the best option to go.

Cheers, Jan

I bought a few 3-packs when they popped up on BH’s site for $7.50 each pack. They’ve since upped the price but I can confirm they are new release with good expiry dates (not at home so I can’t check the actual date).

Small correction, Superia 400 Premium soon to be the ONLY option 😉

While I have noted discussion in Fuji links about 3 and 5 packs being discontinued, to date, I have never seen notice that the film itself, single rolls, are being discontinued. This was discussed a fair bit at Photrio as well. Do you have a link showing single rolls are done?

I wish I bought a few more 100 roll boxes of Industrial when I was in Shinjuku last. Kicking myself now. The price was still decent then...about 40% less than rolls in Canada at the time.

Interesting.

Superia, I thought (for all speeds) was done being manufactured.

Maybe, they just found old stock, but didn't have packaging?

I can't find the Fujifilm announcement, unfortunately.

How about this instead... if Fujifilm was still selling single rolls, you'd expect Yodobashi Camera to sell them, right?

The link below shows all the varieties of Superia X-TRA 400 that Yodobashi currently sells excluding discontinued items. The only product available is a 135-36 3-pack.

Possibly...but I still see sinle rolls for sale here in Canada. I'll have to dig deeper here.

I'm not sure about the Canadian market. My observations/comments are specific to the Japanese domestic market.

Number of rolls sold in a pack aside, up to now when Fujifilm has announced a film as discontinued on their Japanese language website, its game over for that film worldwide. I have no idea if Superia X-TRA 400 will be an exception to that pattern.

I don't buy 35mm too often and locally Color plus and c200 is the cheapest, about 4-5€ and checked Superia Xtra 400 being surprised by 6+€ pricing around. $11 for 3x36 is very cheap nowadays! I've just gotten a P&S and stuff like this is great to shoot in.

Maybe because there wasn't one....😉.
As I've written above: "Fujifilm Europe has also told me that Superia X-Tra 400 remains in production."
In the last years they were a very reliable source.
The film is easily availble in North America and Europe. As long as that is the case, I will continue using it. Life is too short to worry every day 🙂.

Cheers, Jan
