so, a long one here folks so i will start with the condensed version and you can decide if you want to read the whole thing.

i have opened a gallery and photographic centre in my hometown of London. we have printing, film, studio, gallery and camera rental services. want to rent a 4x5? we have 3. a filed lighting kit for environmental portraiture? multiple options here.

now, back to the story.

i recently came to the conclusion that getting shot at isn't much fun and truthfully, i would rather photograph my neighbours than continue on my present trajectory. sadly, photographing my neighbours isn't a lucrative market.

i will continue to shoot assignment work and write however i want to be able to shoot projects that i am fully committed to. create the best work possible.
thus i have launched a small business in this strange vortex of awesome photojournalism/documentary photography in Southwestern Ontario.

(seriously folks, Ontario is a hotbed of activity. The new Ryerson Image Center in Toronto, Scotia Bank Contact Festival, Ottawa's festival, Donald Weber, Pikto, Larry Towell, Boreal Collective, Mike Berube, Stephen Bulger Gallery... there is something in the water here)

the business. medium (name) is a gallery, fully equipped studio, full film and darkroom services for all formats, large format digital printing, high end scanner solutions, workshop and equipped microcosmos. if you want to take workshops from working, credible talent, we will be hosting them. if you want to rent a Toyo and a few lenses, give us a ring. the services list is long. we are also in the process of bringing on board a super talented and motivated printer for our darkroom.

on this Friday (short notice i know) we are hosting our first gallery opening and if you are in spitting distance, say the word. it's beautiful work from a friend who spent a few months with The National Ballet of Belarus. all on 35mm tri-x and a 20mm believe it or not! the event starts at 7pm and drinks on the house!

anyhow, if anyone is in the 'hood during the future, please stop by and we will set up the Rochester Optical and glass plates!

cheers to all and maybe one of these seasons we can host an RFF get-together! i'll invite Larry

I'm a bit out of range but wish you all the best! For the opening, don't discount reaching out to audiences who can't be present using a live webcam feed, maybe a link via social-media etcetera etcetera.

Cool. I'm not too far away (In Cambridge) for school. Maybe I'll drop by sometime. It'd be nice to get some stuff going on in Cambridge as well... though that's tricky.

John, that sounds great. I am sure the family feels better to know you are not "on the front", as interesting or important as it may seems to be.
I really wish you luck with this new venture, and I hope to find a way, one day, to either visit London, or to have you as a guest here.
In fact, why don't you start thinking about workshops far, far away from home 😉😀

1. Awesome - we'd rather have you bullethole-free but love what you do.

2. Create some categories for your wordpress posts and associate the posts with them. It will save you in the end to get in that practice. And benefit the Web site and your marketing. If you need any help in that area, lemme know. It's my day job and what allows me to buy equipment that far exceeds my talent.

Exciting news, John. 'Medium' sounds like a great hub for photographers. My warmest wishes for luck and success. 🙂

Congratulations and best wishes for your new venture, John. Also, looking forward to seeing your project based work in the near future. If it's anything near as good as your PJ work, it will be special indeed!
PS make sure you serve good coffee - it might help increase traffic through the gallery 🙂
Also, any chance you could post a few photos of your new venture in this thread? Might also be useful on the web site - I went looking but couldn't find any images, even on the About page.

Anyway, just wanted to wish you all the best!
