New Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 lens?

hopefully this will be priced more for the users rather than the collectors.

i think it's a really cool idea to remake some of those classics with modern coatings and materials.

If they are doing this, I hope they'll update the front end a bit so it can take regular screw-in filters.

I'd like to see Summar, Summitar, classic Elmar 50/3.5, and Summaron 35/3.5.

I like this bit:

"Will not compete with the currently available Leica M lens designs"

Ya think? A 28mm lens with max aperture of F5.6?
The regular asph Elmarit is already tiny and it has an f2.8 aperture. The slowest I would have gone would be f3.5. Which would be a miniscule lens.

Not even Lomo would release something like this! The Lomo Minitar is a 32mm 2.8 and it is a pancake..

The fact they can sell a digital camera without LCD proves they can basically sell anything.

Any criticism is superfluous.

Personally I do like the idea of limited products. They should reissue the Summicron 5cm Rigid with 0.7mm minimum focus distance, and Kodak, some HIEs.

It's just like the M-D: minimal incremental engineering and Leica clientele will most certainly buy all that they build.

This is just another way to create profits and that's good for shareholders.

Nice to see all the positivity.
Leica should have a dedicated engineer chained to a fence somewhere so that every time they announced something new and different, people could walk by, call him names and give him 40 lashes.

This would be 100% a collector lens.
What user would want to be limited to a f5.6 28mm lens?

Actually it is not a problem for Orion 15 users.
Here is the link for recent pictures taken with this lens by russian speaking users. Some are using it on M Leicas.

Some users prefer this lens rendering over more fast 28ts and not using it just because of the price.

This old Leica lens might be the same. If they only make it in black. 🙂

the more you stop down a lens, the less of its character remains. I do think many people will consider f5.6 a limitation, as you so describe.

However, with a f5.6 max lens, you can shoot wide open anytime, get pretty good depth of field, and zone focus quite easily at 28mm. Somewhat of the same reasons I'd rather have my f2.8 35mm summaron than a f1.4 summilux. Personally, I think a 28mm summaron would be a ton of fun on the street and for landscapes.

agree with hoping that they add regular filter threads.

Having said all of this, doubt i'll get one. Trying to get rid of things and simplify, that have more selection of character lenses is a luxury I no longer want.

Yes, lenses work at f5.6. I understand that. It's just helpful to have some apertures that are larger than f5.6 too.

Agreed. On the upside I do see lots of softness, flare and haze in those Orion images so there is that going for it.
But that's ok cuz those lenses only cost like a nickel. It's not like they paid $300 for a Lomo Minitar as I did.. 😱 😀

Guess it will be listed as a budget lens. For Leica, "budget" probably means something priced under $2,000 (and never below $1,000). I bet $1,495 would be a fair point for them - but not for me.

Think about it, it's just ridiculous.
