The new M6 showed up today (thanks, Erik!), so I went out at lunch to bang off a quick roll. Nothing special - it was too cold to feel overly creative. I also went out again after work to see just how well the ASPH handles bright light sources - very impressive.

Less impressive is the quality of this batch of Costco scans. I think I'm going to have to break down and buy a scanner capable of handling Tri-X.

XP-2 Super, EI 250...

Looks good! I just tried a some XP2 and I think it's quite nice. Going to try scanning
them to see how turn out. You've got a great setup!

I've just tried scanning my XP2 negs using my Scan Dual IV and Vuescan. Scanned as color
negs these seem to have a very good tonal range. Very smooth. The Scan Dual IV is also good
with Tri-X or B/W in general. If you can find one (they have recently been discontinued)
it won't break the bank for about $250 or less. Get a scanner and have at it!

Francisco - thanks, it was literally just a grab shot! I was trying to find a scene with many points of light, and I work in Naperville. So...

ywenz - let me see what I can do. I don't have a table-top setup at the moment.

Way - thanks for the tip on the scanner. Do you know if their "Automatic Dust Brush" is the same as Digital ICE? I'm a complete newb to scanners. The price is certainly right!

Geoff - I like your images better. 😉 I'm going to use the Sheltie image as a training aid - it's much too hard at the moment, but the detail's there. I need to learn a few more PS tools - levels ain't cutting it with this one.

I need to learn B&W postprocessing - most of what I've done up to now has been color RAW work with minimal manipulation. This is a whole new world! I'm hoping I can attend the local edition of the Nikon School here shortly - I'm told that their postprocessing class is great for what it is.

I decided to send the M6 to DAG for a CLA now instead of later - it's still a little cold here for much street shooting, and that way I'll have it back in time for spring. It's going to be tough to give it up so quickly!

Ken,

There is no ICE on the SD IV, though I believe ICE does not work or work well
with B&W film.

Ken, where in Chicagoland do you live? I'm in Schaumburg, but am planning on moving into the city soon..

I'm out in Aurora, and work in Naperville.

I'm agitating for a local coffee group, maybe at a centrally located Borders or B&N on the weekend. Interested? There's a thread in the Clubs forum - please chime in!

I would estimate 25% of my images on my site (Photojournalism) have been shot with the M6/35 Summicron Asph. combonation. I can't wait for Leica to release the digital M as I will resume that combo again although with the 28 Summicon Asph. since the camera will have a 1.3X crop factor.
