Hi everyone,
I've lurked off & on here over the past few months, but time hasn't permitted me to actively participate. Time still probably doesn't permit it, but I've signed up anyway and will make an effort to drop by more often, since it seems to be such a friendly place! 🙂 I was born in the USA, lived in Australia most of my life, but have lived here in Italy for the past few years.

My RF suite currently consists of a Zorki-1, a FED-2, a Corfield Periflex 1, a Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta BX (533/16), and a pre-war Welta Weltur (6x6). When I first "discovered" rangefinders, I drooled over a variety of different makes & models, but in the end decided to just get my feet wet with the cheap Soviet cameras, to see if I really liked RFs. Luckily, they were well built, and work like charms. Later, I added the Periflex (which was not so cheap), simply because they are so unusual, if not so easy to use.

Sin of sins 😱, I also have a Canon D60 SLR, which does not detract from my enjoyment of any of the above! My wife gets all the good stuff: she uses my simple old Yashica FX-3, but with a nice set of CZ lenses, and her Christmas present a couple of years back was a nice little Contax T2, which I wish I'd kept for myself 😱

Look forward to talking to you all here. Soon, after much procrastination and endless research, I will finally be getting a film scanner, so will be able to share some RF pictures here from time to time!

Cheers,
Kai

Welcome Kai! Good to see new members to share our passion and addiction to RF photography!

Just had a quick glance of your gallery. My God! You are very good! Love all those wonderful exotic locations that you went! I must go to Cambodia after seeing your photos! 😀

Welcome to the forums Kai!
you really have some great stuff in your gallery, I especially like the Indonesia pictures, what a place!
Your morocco pictures brought back old memories, the smell in the tannery must have been quite something🙂
Anyways, looking forward to more of your pictures!
cheers,
phil

Thanks Peter & Felipe,
I enjoyed your galleries, too, Peter - you've got some great stuff in there. Your Vietnam gallery brought back memories!

Felipe, yes, the tanneries really smelt bad! I suppose you get used to it if you live nearby or work in them! Those photos are pretty "old"... and taken with a silly Canon Powershot 350 - I think it was Canon's very first digital camera, with VGA 640x480 output. My laptop was so slow and its hard drive was so small, that I had to reduce all the pictures I took on that long trip by half - further degrading what were already pretty poor quality images. Live and learn! Silly me, I had all kinds of good film gear left at home, back in 1997 I just wanted to travel with that new gadget.

Those Indonesia pictures were shot with a Pentax Super A, which I still have. Unfortunately, I have hundreds of negatives of that and other trips stored away in a box which I won't see again for some years. I'd really have liked to have them now that I'm getting that film scanner (soon), to "pad out" those parts of my site.

Thanks again for your nice comments!

Hi peter_n,

In the end, I've decided on the Epson 4870. When Canon announced the 9950F, it threw a bit of a spanner in the works, but in the end, I felt the Epson was still better value for money. I like the fact that the software Epson provides is better out of the box (by far) than what Canon offers... even though I'll probably be using VueScan anyway. I'd wait around for the upcoming 4990, but for my purposes, the 4870 already does all I need the scanner for. Having said that... I'm still going to wait and see what Vincent over at photo-i has to say about the 4990, if they ever send him one!

Cheers,
Kai

Welcome to this warm place! Kai, 🙂

I've also been looking arouund to get a fine flatbed scanner especiallly for film scanning. It seems Epson 4990 is the only choice locally, as the 4870 has just been discontinued here and the 4990 is now on sale w/. the same price of an old 4870.

Hi Keven,
That's interesting that the 4870 has already been discontinued in Hong Kong. It should certainly be at least as good as the 4870. Of course, they're claiming an impossibly high DMax figure in the new scanner, but that's marketting for you.
Cheers,
Kai
