new mp question

so I went in just to look at them, but the salesguy offered me a great deal so I ended up buying it. I still can't believe how much money I just spent on this camera.

In any case, I have a question on shutter speeds. I've never owned a leica before and I know that on the lower speeds you are supposed to hear 2 distinct timers going off. One of the timers however keeps going for a half second after the shutter has fired (from about 1/30th on down). So I hear the 2 timers, the snikt of the shutter, then a single timer finish droning. Is this normal?

happy thanksgiving.

Yep very normal, just the shutter cycle finishing up , i have had several M bodies and they all do it:) I got an Mp about 2weeks ago. I LOVE it , enjoy

Nice on Frank, on the button as always :)

shaaktiman, welcome to the land of Leica, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

An old buddy once said that once you've held and tried a Leica regardless of the view held about RFs at the time, it's just a matter of time before you have one. It came true for me, bank account took a while to recover but I've never regretted it.

Have fun using it! I started off using a string of CV stuff on mine, great combination.

Happy Thanksgiving

Yes they make funny noises but that's the charm isn't it? Enjoy the cam shaaktiman, I'm sure you will! :) To repeat Joe's question, where did you eventually buy?

Congratulations, Shaaktiman. You've posted some good photos in the past. I look forward to seeing some new ones from the MP.

It is definitely some sort of disease - I have one of each of M2, MP, IIIa and IIIf - It started as an innocent excursion into quality RF gear with a user Mp-4 and now I have it bad!

Funny though that the III models actually came after the M's. I find them great to stuff in a coat pocket almost like a P&S (sunny 16 and all that).

I actually only own two Leica lenses - a 1935 Elmar 50mm 3.5 and a 35mm 3.5 Summar, the others are Canon (50mm 1.9 Serenar and 50mm 1.4) plus 85mm and 135mm Russky jobs. All get used on the M bodies with adapter rings.

I normally get great results from all of them, but the MP let me down on a recent trip to Egypt - everything came out 1 to 2 stops overexposed. I'm sure I had everything set right and the battery is OK - perhaps it was the change of film stock from Fuji to Kodak that caught me out?

Anyway, Shaaktiman, welcome to the club, I'm sure you won't regret it :)

Ha a disease indeed, I too started with only 1 a pretty M6 classic and a 50cron, then a new M7 followed by an M3 and an M2 , I almost had all the M's covered:) well cleaned house and now I am down to an MP and a chrome M6 classic, but I really wanna try an M4 for the heck of it:) the only one I have no desire for is the M5, too big and ugly for my taste:)

Perhaps a Mr. T * lens?

sorry

lol -- well, I'm sure not much change left, so probably a used Summicron rather than a brand new Zeiss will do. Besides, what better than a good ole collapsible 'cron on a Leica? Or collapsible Summitar? ;)

yeah, the m5 is probably the only one I never considered buying once I had made the decision to get one. I spent whole weekends considering the virtues of a beater m3 vs an excellent condition m6 from keh or popflash. In the end I figured that since this might be the last 35mm I ever buy I may as well get the one that I REALLY want.

I ended up paying $2895 for it, new with a USA passport and everything. I think that the $3,300 list price is not as firm as I had always assumed. (Glad now that I didn't buy online.) I recommend just walking in to wherever you plan on buying and asking for their best price. You never know what an individual dealer will be willing to do. I am sure that my particular guy would have given that price to anyone he spoke to but had I bought it from their website it would have been all paid for before we got a chance to bargain.

He did ask me to keep it quiet but I have no idea if he was serious or not. If you want the dealer name just email me and I'll give it to you. (adamselbst at hotmail dotcom.) It's no one you haven't heard of before. :)

So, the 2nd (sketchy) part of my master plan is to try and sell the free leicavit that I am supposed to get now as part of leica's rebate thingy. If I actually receive the thing and manage to get around $500 for it (possible?) then I'll have only paid $2400 for the camera itself. But I don't want to count my chickens blah blah.

To be honest, you can get a like-new mp from popflash for $2400 and not have to jump through any hoops for it. (and probably not pay any tax either unless you're in CA. The tax on mine was over $200.) I just really wanted the passport.

Thanks a lot for the encouragement everyone (and Nick in particular.) I've been having a lot of fun with it so far, it is one SWEET piece of equipment! Now all I have to do is start saving to upgrade my mostly voigtlander glass collection. I have a 50 summicron so far but the 35 and 75 are looking tempting. (and the 50 elmar and the... help.)

so... anyone want a new leicavit? trade for glass maybe?

oh, and frank...

busting on Mr. T's glass is a seriously bad idea. I pity the foo!

(sorry, that's real, real stale I know.)

if i am not mistaken, like new from popflash is actually new but gray market. you may want to verify.

Congrats Adam! One thing to remember is that you need to mail the registration to Leica within 31 days of the purchase date on your receipt for your U.S. Passport warranty to be valid. (I almost forgot. )

The winder Leicavit offer is real, there have been quite a few on sale over on photo.net recently... ;)

Actually mine (a demo, now long since sold even money for 2 M6s and a 28mm lens) failed to do that when I got it (the drone didn't finish droning until I moved the advance lever) so I had to send it back and be without my camera for several weeks. I'd thought a Demo was checked out by the techs before being sold but obviously I was wrong.

What color/viewfinder?

I built such a nice one on the a la carta website (black MP, no markings, .58 viewfinder, chrome controls), sadly the price is $3500. I think I wont buy another camera until: a. my bessa R breaks b. until I can afford a MP.

Glad you got a good camera in your hands, hope it lasts a lifetime!

oooh, a la carte. Even though I just bought myself a 3g luxury item the a la carte items are SUPER bourgeouis. I guess that is leica's thing tho huh? As things are now my socialist girlfriend (raised on a kibbutz) is kind of mystified by my obsession. An a la carte leica would give her a conniption.

I decided to go retro. Silver with a .72 finder. My sole leica lens is a black 50mm but the silver stuff looks so good on it I carry my cv 35 in chrome on it sometimes.

I like your portfolio. The AIDS shots are amazing. Especially of the legs/feet in the shower at the drain. Very moving. Great photojournalism!!

Hey, wait a minute; this MP question is not new!

So how's your new MP, shaak? If I were rich, oh boy, would I buy one, no, make that two.
