New SLIDE film from Rollei!

So Rollei just announced (by Instagram) that they are introducing a new slide film, as far as I know, 35mm only. I paste all the info poster here:

Rollei Vario Chrome 135-36 is a medium to high-speed color reversal film that is intended for photography under low-level daylight illumination or under other light sources using proper filtration. Rollei Vario Chrome has a medium degree of sharpness, its image results are characterized by a slightly visible grain and a warmish image tone.

As the name of the film suggests it has a broad exposure latitude from 200 to 400 ISO (DX coded at 320 ISO). If you intend to project the slides we suggest to shoot the film at 200 ISO whereas 320-400 ISO is preferable for scanning applications.

Pre-sale will start next week on Monday July 3rd. We expect the supplies to arrive in week 28 so that we'll be able to start shipping between July 10th and 14th.

What do you guys think?
 
Wonderful that new films are coming out. Stability of colour over decades will be the unknown. Have always kept shooting slides of my children. Archival.

I'm so stoked! I hope this helps save the slide film business by adding versatility to the market.

One of the reasons I shoot so little slide is that I'm basically limited to all 100 ISO films. That means no shooting it on vacation for me because I don't know what lighting conditions I'll encounter so I tend to take mostly ISO 400 film; which has been absent from the slide market for almost 10 years. Plus I don't like to mix/match film types (color neg/slide) since I prefer to process everything together when I get back.

If I can get what I preorder before my vacation in August it might be slide-only for me for the first time!
 
Thanks for the link fellas! So this, Ektachrome possibly later in the year and hopefully the Ferrania slide film in due course. 2017 is the return of the slide film!
 
Great news! I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison with this and CR200. I wonder what the best color-compensation filter would be to counteract the yellow-ishness that CR200 was...
 
Good news. I only wish that it is a reasonable cost - The last Provia I saw was A$27/roll... Another hurdle is the limited and expensive development options here. It costs me A$16/roll to develop C41 without prints or scans locally, last I saw E6 was above A$20 to develop only. That's almost A$50/roll in all. No way.
Hopefully they bring out some E6 chemicals at a reasonable cost to go with it...
 
This is great news. I shoot about 90% slide and develop all my own. I'd love more options, hopefully 120 is coming or will soon follow. Though, I did buy an f3 so I could support JCH and ektachrome.

My first roll of Fuji Velvia cost me AUD $36 in January 2008. But that roll, theoretically a dollar per slide before processing, started my improvement in photography.
 
It also looks like a "Limited Edition" which screams as respooling some old film.
Why would anyone go to the trouble of developing a new E6 slide film just to make it a limited edition?

^ Yes. It was only re: C41 I mentioned Hillvale. $5 a roll for that is as about as good as it could possibly get.

I use Rewind for my limited excursions with E6 and it's great value considering it's the same price for 35mm/120 and for C41/E6. Without them I don' think I'd bother at all with slide film, I'm never going to use enough to set myself up to develop at home, especially now the kits are increasingly hard to get/huge/expensive.

I've never bothered with 35mm slide film either but if it creeps down in price with these new options becoming available, I might be occasionally tempted. For now I figure if I'm going to the trouble, I may as well use 120.
 
Rewind definitely looks interesting. Even with the postage back and forth, it likely will be cheaper for the develop + scan option compared to my local. Hmmm!

There is no other colour reversal process left in the world, and it is unlikely that any manufacturer would resurrect an old process - getting it certified by modern environmental pollution and workplace safety standards would cost a fortune (it was already given as a reason for discontinuation back when they still were turning over billions with film, and when less chemicals were outlawed).
