News from Japan

A very interesting article, and a very positive one to read for a film lover. Thanks!

Film based photography is still very important to me. I hope that we will have easy access to affordable film and developing for many years to come. What a shame if we have to turn to digital photography because we must do it and not because we want to do it.

Seems digital and film is on the same level:

"The number of participants carrying single lens reflex digital cameras has been growing in the last two to three years," said Kanji Kakimoto, director of Nikon Juku in Tokyo. "Half of the participants use film cameras."

Hey, if my wife finds out that film cameras are chick magnets she's going to make me switch totally over to digital! 😱

News from Japan

Japan is a global trendsetter so that's good news for film. With film becoming an eccentricity rather than the mainstream medium one can fully expect some Japanese photographers to embrace it for its hipness. It's perhaps too early to tell, but I have seen such signs in flickr.

Ah! Now I understand why the use of digital is rising in the last two years, the japanese women found out 😀

Film more controlable than digital

Film more controlable than digital

I can instantly exercise better control with my Leica than I can with my Sony. I don't need to plod through multiple menus to make a simple change in exposure. I can positviely work every control of the Leica in a pitch black room.

I will look at Panasonic's first DSLR with serious interest next winter when it starts shipping but you'll need to pry that black M7 outa of my cold, dead hands...

The promise of digital is always alluring but the burden it carries, both in terms of awkward cameras plus concerns about where to archivally store the huge digital files, keeps me a film user now for my serious work.

I guess film is a chick thing.

Actually, what the article implies is that film is not a chick thing, and that therefore special women-only film photography courses are designed and held to attract women to film photography in Japan.

But hey, I'm all for marketing film photography to women, as long as it doesn't involve coloring things pink and then charging twice as much for them as for the men's version.

Melanie,

If you've ever seen some of the pics here of what some of the male RFF'ers have done to "dress up" their gear you have nothing to worry about! 😀
